Digg me

Over the last five years, I’ve written on a number of topics, and about a number of people.

Having a blog that’s well read, well ranked, and well linked has its advantages. Quite often I’ll write about a certain company or person, they’ll find it and often times pick up the phone and call me directly to thank me. It use to blow me away, and I still gets me jazzed when someone takes the time to call about something I’ve written. It’s enabled me to connect to an number of really cool people that without this blog – I most likely wouldn’t have an opportunity to connect with.

Marc Mancini at YTB FunshineI received such a voice mail this weekend – but this particular message took me by surprise.

What was remarkable about it was that it wasn’t anything that I had written recently. In fact I wrote it two and a half years ago – back before all the “drama” from our industry professionals started to stir and the constant shaming of the Founders, the Company, and our people who they claim have no interest in being legitimate “Travel Agents”.

The article I’m talking about was a post announcing YTB’s E-Campus training, and the person who called to thank me was Dr. Marc Mancini himself.

He found what I wrote and was so moved by my article that he immediately picked up the phone to call me to offer his sincere gratitude and thanks for my support.

I was on the phone at the time, and the caller ID said “Unknown Caller” so I let it go to voice mail. I wish I would have picked it up, because it was me who wanted to thank him – not the other way around.

Why? Because guys like Dr. Mancini are part of the solution – not part of the problem.

At the time I wrote that piece I had no knowledge of the battle that was about to erupt. We all knew there were “issues” stirring in the industry and E-Campus was a step in the right direction in qualifying and legitimizing YTB Travel Network as a true host. Come to find out years later is that you can take all the courses you’d like, attain all the credentials you want, but as long as your name is attached to an MLM host – it’s never going to be good enough for some.

These are simple minds who just won’t tolerate MLM because it’s a buzzword they throw around without having any true idea of what it is or what it means. It’s just bad. Very – very bad. Oh sure, they all claim to be experts, but have you actually seen the crap they think it is?

It makes me laugh it’s so ridiculous. So lame and comical I haven’t needed to defend any of it outside of this blog for years. If people who read that junk are stupid enough to fall for such nonsense, they shouldn’t be in business to begin with.

Dr. Mancini got his share of ridicule too just after E-Campus was announced. People called him all sorts of names, threatened to boycott his trainings – the standard threats that we’ve all come to know years later. What impresses me most about Dr. Mancini is that he had the guts to stick to beliefs. Yes, he was being paid for the courses he created for YTB (as he should be) but he never backed down due to pressure from traditionalist. We’ve seen plenty of examples over the years of just how nasty and irrational a small segment can be. Think back to MailPound and Davidoff Associates and how they were relentlessly scorned and chastised for attempting to offer value to YTB Travel Network as a Host Agency – not just some random MLM.

What’s so odd to me is that the “spin” from this small segment was (actually still is after all these years) that people like me aren’t interested in learning about the travel industry at all. The focus according to them is “recruiting” – and that my friend is a word that conjures up some of the deepest fears and phobias I’ve ever witness in human behavior.

I mean it REALLY gets some people worked up.

I’ve heard it said many times that if YTB would simply drop the MLM part of our pay plan, we just might be accepted as a legitimate agency. What these dolts can’t comprehend is that “somebody” is being paid in every Travel Host out there that charges a fee. (To the guy at the top of the pyramid no less!) We just happen to offer part of that “fee” to those who are responsible for making the sale. To me, that makes it not only fair, but a much more attractive compensation package than any other agency out there.

And for the traditionalist that are holding out hope that YTB would ever dump the MLM payment structure…sorry, nobody asked you.

No, we’ll stick with true leaders and mentors. Those who have the intelligence to see past some model and look at the people who are involved.

I recently wrote about how this industry (MLM) is chalked full of support and mentors. Nor have I been surrounded by more gratitude and love. Dr. Mancini may not be a part of MLM, but he’s got the true spirit of this industry down packed.

And for that – it’s me that is offering my sincere gratitude to him for not only acting like a true professional, but being part of the solution – not the problem.

Thank YOU Dr. Mancini.

Congratulations to YTB’s new “Travel Agents”

Digg me

Since day one with YTB, I’ve considered myself a “Travel Agent”. Not because I had any special training, achieved any special credentials, or aligned myself with any specific host. It was an attitude that I had when I joined. I was about as green as they came when I joined YTB, but I did have a passion for travel and a desire to learn that got me to the point that I am today. I’ve heard over and over that unless I align myself with one of those legitimate hosts out there, that I’d never be considered a “Travel Agent”.

Yet, the folks with all the arrogance and attitude – haven’t actually experienced the service and value I bring to my clients.

Funshine_geobowl6Fact is, anyone can become a “Travel Agent” with the proper mindset and willingness to learn and it doesn’t matter what company you align yourself with. Other than my family, 99.9% of our clients have no idea who or what YTB is. All they know is Doug and Ronda with BandBVacations.com. If a client has a change in schedule, a problem with a booking, or happen to need assistance with arrangements, the “Agent” they call is us, not the Home Office.

That being said, having the mindset of “Travel Agent” isn’t going to cut the mustard when it comes to servicing our clients. We could have all the love and passion in the world – but without the proper knowledge to actually assist our clients, mindset alone is moot.

It also takes knowledge and training to drive this business and make it a success.

When YTB launched the E-Campus training two years ago with theAcademy.com and Dr. Marc Mancini, I was ecstatic. At the time, it was a major advancement and move towards training our sales force. The move was also “pro-active”, being launched before all the attention and fuss in the news and media publications came out about YTB being some sort of “card mill”. (A term and definition we still don’t answers for two years later.)

Like Carnival Corporation, Apple Vacations, Pleasant Holidays, Collette, World Choice, Globus, and other preferred suppliers who do business with YTB, Dr. Mancini saw something in YTB that lead to this training to help the company achieve its long term goal of being a dominant force in the travel industry.

If you’re going to partner with someone, they might as well be the best. Here’s a little bio that I picked up on Dr. Mancini two years ago.

What’s even more impressive is that the YTB E-Campus program is designed by Dr. Marc Mancini, one of the travel industry’s most highly respected speakers, educators and consultants and authors of such books as Conducting Tours: A Practical Guide, Cruising: A Guide to the Cruise Line Industry, and Selling Destinations: Geography for the Travel Professional. Dr Mancini and his firm are the creative force behind some of the best-known and most successful training programs in the business including training programs for CLIA, AAA, and NTA.

What YTB did was land the industries leading authority in travel to design and implement a very intensive and thorough training program that covers the following 10 segments.

  • Course 101: Overview of the Travel Industry
  • Course 102: Lodging
  • Course 103: Tours / Groups
  • Course 104: Cruising
  • Course 105: Air Travel
  • Course 106: Rail, Car Rentals and the Rest
  • Course 107: Travel Sales, Service and Marketing
  • Course 108: Destinations: North and South America
  • Course 109: Destinations: Europe
  • Course 110: Destinations: Africa, Asia and the South Pacific

And for doing what we as “Travel Agents” should do for our business and completing this course, what do you think YTB did to reward those who took their travel business seriously?

  • The ability to drop the “R” from RTA and the title of “Travel Agent”
  • 75% Commission Contract
  • Monthly YTB Special Promotions
  • Entry For A Free Cruise
  • Exclusive YTB FAM Trips
  • Training Events & Trade Show (Funshine was comped)
  • The Fun & Travel Magazine to help you grow your business

Not too shabby for some rinky-dink MLM that has no interest in Travel huh? Fact is, those who claim YTB doesn’t offer training haven’t been paying attention to the facts. Instead, they choose to ignore any type of training to keep their fantasy over YTB being less than legitimate alive.

We posted a list of those who completed the E-Campus training this past weekend in our newsletter. If you’re a YTB TSO or Rep and you’d like a listing to view, please get signed up on our list. I don’t think it’s appropriate to post this list publicly. With all the attention and animosity from a very small and childish group in the travel industry who have nothing better to do it will simply create more spin and turn this significant accomplishment into something it’s not.

For those who did complete this training, you know who you are. You know the value of knowledge and learning. I commend you for taking responsibility and ownership of your travel business. You can now not only call yourself “Travel Agent”, but earn an above average commission percentage found in the industry. (Industry average being 74%.)

Congratulations!

YTB Launches RPM Trainings

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Digg me

After the close of Funshine last weekend, YTB launched a new training program on Sunday for Reps and Associates – Regional Product Marketing (RPM) Training. YTB is very proud of all the training programs they provide, as they should. The trainings I’ve attended and produced by YTB rivals any trainings I’ve ever participated in for content and curriculum in any industry let alone travel. I’ve been with YTB for several years now, and with every new training YTB creates, they take what they’ve been able to learn from the past to enhance the new trainings and curriculum with better features, content, and presentations to ensure what’s being taught is relevant, fresh and current.

The new RPM curriculum takes the best aspects of the live trainings such as the old CRTA that YTB once held across cities all over the country and has enhanced it’s mission and purpose.

The mission of this program is to educate and equip our Reps to effectively sell the YTB suite of products and to build a successful sales organization.

Don’t mistake this for another version of the CRTA however. There are several key aspects of the RPM Training that set RPM apart. With all the changes, enhancements, and upgrades YTB has experienced over the last two years the company has created a training program that provides information and how-to’s for YTB 2.0. What’s even more impressive, RPM is designed to be updated and enhanced on a weekly basis to provide the participants with the most relevant information available at that time. The only common thread between the CRTA and RPM trainings are they’re both live, and they’re both local.

There are four major categories with the new 4 1/2 hour RPM training that will provide a little insight into what this training program is all about.

  1. What we sell – travel, shopYTB.
  2. How to sell it
  3. How to build a team
  4. Compensation and how to get to Coach’s Corner.

With the advent of First Class Training last year, the completion of E-Campus this summer, supplier seminars provided at Funshine this past weekend, and the plethora of travel related webinars, Seminars @ Sea, and live trainings provided by the industry and various associations, RPM is designed for the new Associate and Rep in our business. While RPM provides an overview of hundreds of suppliers YTB partners with, this new training is not designed for the Travel Store Owner, but for the Associate and Rep.

Nor is RPM designed for anyone outside the company. In the past, the CRTA trainings were a great way to show prospects our product and company culture free of charge. Not so with RPM. For each RPM, participants not only need to register in their back office for the local Trainings, but also pay a $45 registration fee in advance for the 4 1/2 hour trainings. That being said – I can’t think of a better way to get a new Associate off on the right foot with a $45 investment to provide the proper product knowledge and effective marketing techniques.

The goal here is to provide current and relevant content for anyone who wants to learn how to build an organization. YTB will follow this new training program very closely, with pre and post meetings, participant surveys, and continued trainer and field input to ensure accuracy and relevancy. With YTB’s Franchise Model just over the horizon and the opportunity it provides, YTB has been proactive with RPM with this key component in the transition to a Franchise model. The new RPM training not only updates Associates and Reps about YTB 2.0, but is flexible enough to provide both effective communication tool and the proper training program as the Franchise model begins to roll out in 2010.

Case in point. The first RPM training course was held in front of 300 registered participants last Sunday in Orlando. Participants have already enrolled in two more RPM Trainings this upcoming weekend in Irvine and San Fransisco, California. Based on company, field, and trainer input, close to 20 slides have been updated with new information for the trainings this upcoming weekend. As YTB continues to roll out RPM later this month in Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, Detroit, and Newark NJ, and additional RPM trainings scheduled for November in Tampa, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, and Denver, more changes will be made as YTB updates it’s systems and processes.

The best part about RPM…it’s live and in living color.

Don’t get me wrong, I love technology and how easy it is for us to learn and obtain knowledge remotely. The First Class Training launched in October of last year, The Academy’s E-Campus courses designed by industry veteran Marc Mancini, and the regular Thursday night Training Calls with suppliers were all designed to provide training for our Travel Store Owners. While I find each of these training modules both effective and well done, it can’t compare with “live” events YTB once held via the CRTA’s or currently do with YTB University or the supplier seminars conducted at both the YTB Convention and Funshine.

These live events provide interaction and the ability to ask questions that you just can’t get via the remote trainings. (Although there are ideas to address that shortcoming.) RPM will also provide participants with a class of Certified Company Trainers (48 currently) who have gone through a the proper certification process to ensure that RPM will maintain it’s high standards and mission as it moves forward. With all due respect the the CRTA trainings once held by YTB, some of the trainings provided by a few Directors were not up to company standards. I’ve seen a big movement in trainings across the board on what has become known as “Train the Trainer” and YTB has picked up on this idea for it’s own RPM trainings to ensure relevancy, accuracy, and the proper information designed for the field by the company.

I’m also looking forward to the smaller venues that should provide better retention and interaction between the participants and the trainers. While it’s impressive to see a room filled with 1000 people, the size of RPM has been shaved to possibly 100 registrants after this first wave of trainings roll out across the country. RPM will also look at a few secondary markets like Austin, TX and Montgomery, AL to provide easy access to these emerging markets within YTB.

My hats off the Founders and Executives in the company and especially Derek Avera for this new RPM training. Like most of the new trainings YTB launches, Derek was key in the design and launch of the new RPM training. He first came on the scene with a viable answer to our Travel Training with First Class for new TSO’s last year. With RPM now launched for Associates and Reps in the field with it’s new design and content, it should prove to be a major component in YTB’s dominance in the industry.

Scott Tomer was in town a couple weeks ago and I had a chance to sit down with him in a small group setting the night before the Saturday training. One of the other members of the group asked the question “Why don’t we [YTB] hand out more travel awards at Convention?”

What Scott told us, was the idea of Travel Awards did come up for Friday’s afternoon General Session at this years Convention. If you recall, Friday afternoon unleashed the industries best commission contracts and benefits in the industry, the upgrades for “Steals and Deals” and the enhanced Great Escapes packages for both Travel Store owners, and clients. With Friday afternoon dedicated to Travel it just made sense to offer Travel Awards. However, when they called the travel leaders in our company to ask if they would be at Convention, every one of them said “Yes, I’ll be at Funshine.”

The “Convention” our travel leaders were talking about begins today at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center. Funshine provides two days of seminars and a trade show floor with some 60 or 70 suppliers who are soliciting their products and services for your clients next vacation.

Funshine will also hold a General Session tonight to hand out awards for our travel leaders who have produced significant travel sales. There will be other upgrades and announcements; one of which is a new “skin” with additional features which you can get a feel for from with our Golf site. (Sorry, couldn’t hold back on this one, but since it’s already live…what the heck.)

The trade show floor of course is free, and those of us who have completed the Marc Mancini’s E-Campus series of courses also receive a complimentary upgrade to all the seminars offered by our preferred suppliers. Other suppliers who I don’t have course descriptions for but will be at Funshine to educate TSO’s who want to learn include Epic Tours, The Mark Travel Corporation, Worldwide Golf Vacations, MSC Cruises, Cunard Lines, Worldwide Tours, Inc., and Carey International.

When you take a look at the list of seminars above and then compare it to the Home Based Agent Show and Conference in Atlantic City in a little more than a week, it’s shocking to see how a single company like YTB can attract a similar segment and number of suppliers for its conference. I’d also be willing to bet that YTB will provide a larger crowd for Funshine compared to the Home Based Agent Show designed for an entire segment of the industry.

It should be a fun weekend with our peers who have a legitimate desire to learn and grow in the travel industry from suppliers who see YTB for what it truly is – the 25th largest Seller of Travel in the industry

Digg me

I wrote on Monday about Paul Henderson, who like me is getting just a little tired of the nonsense filling our in boxes, and the witch hunt that’s going on in our industry right now. There are those who believe that we as a group of MLM’ers can not call ourselves “Travel Agents”. The reality of the issue however is that not one association or group has been able to outline for us what type of qualifications are necessary to provide us with the proper definition or qualifications to be considered a “Travel Agent”.

IATA enables you to carry their card with a paid commission level of $5000. CLIA just upgraded their qualifications with training and a minimum of 25 cruise sales.  Others have their own hoops to jump through such as a business license, or an approved host that you need to align yourself with.

Yet we are still left without one clear definition as an industry that everyone can agree on (or at least reference too) to become a real live “Travel Agent”.

bullhornOver the last couple of years YTB has made many changes in order to legitimize it’s model in the industry and become a respected member of the industry. We’ve listened to and responded accordingly. Some call it “reactionary” and that’s okay, because it’s the first step for some in noticing that changes ARE being made. Before any of this mess erupted back in October of 2007 with Royal Caribbean terminating it’s agreement with YTB, during a Funshine “Travel” Trade Show no less, YTB rolled out E-Campus, a course designed by one of the industries leading educators, Marc Mancini. YTB also revamped it’s certification program to First Class Training, and with that, changed both the level of commission percentages, and qualifications to book directly with vendors with it’s First Class Training Program. When you enter the industry with YTB you are an Affiliate, and without the proper training via either YTB or an indsutry associations no title of “Travel Agent” is bestowed upon you.

In addition to training, the company has made numerous changes in the way it actually books travel and helps customers secure the services we offer. The Convergentware upgrade with direct connections to GDS, suppliers and vendors has eliminated the need to “glean” numbers, and since we have enough staff now to handle our own calls in our expanded Home Office, the primary number in the help section is now directing customers to our own support center instead of pawning the responsibilty off on vendors.

In addition to the changes YTB has made, we’ve seen changes from suppliers such as Carnival Cruise lines, who implimented a minimum booking policy in eary 2008 before enabling anyone to enjoy a discounted cruise with them. We’ve also seen changes from Assoications such as CLIA who now requires not only training but actual production in order to have the privilege of carrying their card. While I’ve heard of rumblings of a loophole with this, YTB as a company, nor do I support or promote such a loophole.

This above snapshot of changes should provide for many that both YTB and the industry is serious about being a player in this industry. I for one am pleased with the response both the industry and the company has made. There are a select few however who either don’t want to talk about the issues or are incapable of communicating effectively what the real issues are.

I was amused this morning to find a comment, which I approved. In a very roundabout way, this TA finally got to the bottom of his issue after several days of comments and an entire post yesterday.

The real phobia for him and for the rest of this small group is “recruiting”.

I don’t know why it took so long or why he needed to go off on a tangent about Delta Airlines being the first to start cutting commissions in 1995, or that online companies such as Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia and Priceline have call centers to support their initial design of self service booking. My guess is that he needed to show how smart he was and attempt to point out how little I know, thus disqualifying me as someone who is worthy of recruiting anyone into the industry the right way. If he feels that works for him, I have no problem with it, but he could have saved himself a couple days of ranting and badgering, and needless reading by me and just come right out and told everyone that he can’t stand the recruiting aspect and we need to dispose of it in order for him to personally accept me or YTB into the fold of brethren.

I suspect however that he certainly feels better now that he’s been able to vomit on two separate blogs.

Now that he’s fianally been able to get the real issue of the matter, he’s asked me to participate in a webinar that’s coming up at the end of the month. While I’m not sure if he’s cleared this with those who initially set this puppy up, but regardless if he actually has or not, I politely declined the offer to join the group and have chosen to participate instead in a Sail-a-thon with Princess Cruise Lines later that evening.

Be that as it may, I have to wonder why he feels this would benefit me or anyone else in the Travel Industry resolve the issue of “qualifications” and finally be considered a “Travel Agent”.

Here’s the outline of this little seminar and you tell me if this looks like it’s designed to talk about qualifications or if it helps the industry resolve the real issue here.

Card Mills.  Instant Agent Programs. MLM Travel Companies.  These entities spring up relentlessly, convincing consumers that anyone can be a travel agent. Card Mills disparage the professionalism of traditional travel agents and misrepresent industry “benefits” as a reason for joining.

Too often, travel agents are left without the tools necessary to successfully educate consumers and market effectively against the Card Mills.

No longer.

Join Richard Earls, publisher of Travel Research Online, in a webinar that will turn the tide by providing traditional travel agents with effective strategies, press releases and marketing tools to educate their clients on the fallacies of the card mill phenomenon.

You will receive materials after the webinar that will assist you in combatting Card Mills in your own communities.

A panel of experts will assist travel agents with arresting the Card Mills in their tracks.

By the way…the emphasis here is not mine, it’s theirs. This seminar is nothing more than the “witch hunt” that both Paul Henderson and I both abhor. Why on God’s green earth would I have any interest learning how to spew negative propaganda about a company that I support? There is nothing about this recruiting message that talks about the issue of qualifications, training, or customer support to enable me to be a better travel agent.

What it does appear to teach however is how belittle me in press releases, marketing tools, and seminars. (Something that I’ve grown quite accustom to, and expect as a rebuttal to what I write here.)

Oh Joy!

According to some, I’m the one who doesn’t offer “value”, and I’m being ridiculous for not wanting to spend my afternoon rolling in this very large pile of horse dung.

I do find it serendipitous that while this group of professionals attempt to educate the world that all we do is focus on recruiting so anyone can be one of these Travel Agents, the lead company they will be talking about and slandering is actually doing what they should do…selling travel and supporting the hand that feeds them.

Now there’s a novel idea!

I’m sorry gang, but I have to state for the record once again. I don’t find this “get together” the least bit productive, or see how it answers any of the issues we talked about on Monday.

The answer is still “no thanks”.

But that just me.

Digg me

When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found out that the pens would not work at zero gravity (ink will not flow down to the writing surface). To solve this problem, it took them one decade and $12 million. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 degrees C.

kiss1What did the Russians do to solve the same problem?

They used a pencil.

One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soapbox, which happened in one of Japan ‘s biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soapbox that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soapbox went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the problem.

Engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soapboxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty. No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they spent an exorbitant amount tf money to do so.

But when a rank-and-file employee in a small company was posed with the same problem, he didn’t use X-rays and cameras, but instead bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soapbox passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.

When I sobered up some 20 years ago everyone, including myself at the time spent a considerable amount of time discussing and contemplating what it would take to become one of those “old timers” in AA. When I was fresh out of rehab I joined a Home Group up in Pittsburgh that had one of those “old timers” in it. His name was Sam P. and at the time, he had been sober for some 25 years. Sam was great, and everyone looked up to him and boy did he have some stories. (We all did.) We hung on his every word and constantly asked what it would take for us to become an old timer like he was.

His response was classic, and I can still hear his high pitched sarcastic voice all these years later when he would reply with:

“Don’t pick up, and don’t die!”

I guess after 20 years of not picking up, and the fact that I’m still here is proof that his very simple method works. There isn’t a day the goes by that I don’t think about being a recovering alcoholic, but I can’t remember the last time I craved a drink or a drug. It’s just not an option any longer.

Now I drink Kool-Aid, and frankly, it’s a much better alternative than the poison I use to consume. It clouded my judgment and made me paranoid. I would also obsess over the smallest of things, always focused on the problem, never the solution.

I also learned about K.I.S.S. in AA. If you don’t know, K.I.S.S. stands for Keep It Simple Stupid. Today I can spot within seconds how some can make things much harder than they need to be, and have a tendency to complicate things. I guess they need to prove either to themselves or someone else that they’re smarter than everyone else. Sometimes it can be extremely funny, but more times than not, it’s rather sad to watch, knowing there is a solution out there, and it’s much simpler than most could conceive.

I’m constantly told by others how to fix the issues with YTB. Oddly enough, most of the criticism and comments come from people who don’t have any practical experience on the MLM side of our business that can offer anything worth while. Yet their focus, attention, and problems are always on the MLM side of our business. It’s a huge distraction for most and emotions can run very high causing some really nasty conversations that honestly don’t do anything more than make one side feel better about themselves while they attempt to shame the other side into submission.

That being said, the answer for YTB lies on the non MLM side of our business, the one you actually pay for, the one that’s set up like any other host agencies out there. (Nexion comes to mind.)

The answer is simple, sell travel.

Mind you, selling travel will not put to rest and resolve anything for some. Some I’m afraid might never come to grips that YTB is a part of the travel industry and will never accept any of it’s members as peers. Honestly, I don’t know why those opinions really matter, being as miserable as they are. (Who wants to hang with attitudes like that??) But for those who can look at the facts, for those who don’t need to make excuses, or try to spin and justify things in order to simply belittle and malign, most will look at Travel Weekly, notice what Carnival is doing, and pick up how YTB lookes and acts like a bonified Host.

Keep it simple. Focus on the main goal from our Founders, and that’s to be the number one Travel Agency in the world. Oddly enough, you need to sell travel in order to do that. (Who knew??) By doing so, it will resolve the problems and issues of those who matter, and for the ones who don’t matter…well there’s really not much we can do now is there? So why worry about it?

I know of some who are still carrying around resentment and anger over what happened to them some 20 years ago when AL Williams took over the Insurance Industry. Can you imagine? Who wants to live like that? I sure don’t, and if you think you can learn something from anyone who does, you’re sadly mistaken.

Let it go already, and Keep It Simple Stupid.

If It Aint Right…

Digg me

In the years I’ve been with YTB I’ve seen numerous changes in the travel industry. I’ve also seen plenty of predictions and it can be very difficult to separate fact from fiction. A big reason for this blogs existence is to help separate what’s real and what’s not. That’s not to say I’ve been right 100% of the time, but I do take what I know at the time, with corresponding documentation to back it up and share what I know. I’m also a big proponent of solutions not problems. When you’re out there on the internet looking for garbage, it becomes increasingly difficult to find the golden nuggets that are right under your nose. The old catchphrase, ‘you are what you eat’ and ‘garbage in garbage out’ come to mind.

trainingBack in late July, 2008 CLIA shored up some of the concerns “Travel Professionals” have regarding illusions that if you’re participating in a Travel MLM, you’re only in it for the perks. The new requirements from CLIA now mandate that if you would like to enjoy the privilege of a FAM or Agent perks, you need to be actively pursuing continued education, and also produce a minimum amount of travel in order to qualify and carry the CLIA credential.

2009 ID Card applicants are required to be enrolled in, or to have achieved a designation (ACC, MCC, ECC, ECCS) in CLIA’s Cruise Counsellor Certification Program. Attainment of an ACC designation requires a program of mandatory and elective training options as well personal cruise experience, shipboard inspections and 25 cabin sales within the two year enrollment period.

A short time after these requirements came out, critics of CLIA and Travel MLM’s claimed to find some sort of loophole to get around these new requirements. I’m not going to elaborate just how this works because my purpose here isn’t to show everyone how to cheat, steal and lie. Nor have I found anything to verify that anyone is actually attempting to cheat the system. Besides, from what I’ve been able to gather, it’s much more troublesome and expensive anyway, and if caught, you will not pass go.

If you found information on the internet on how to make an IED would you go promoting it all over the place? Of course not. Why this loophole is promoted on blogs, trade publications, and even in Travel Weekly’s Virtual Summit astounds me.

So forgive me if I focus on evidence of those who are doing this the right way, and provide links in an attempt to urge anyone and everyone to do the right thing here. It’s a strange concept I know, but from what I’ve seen, those who have been harping about whats wrong will never be happy no matter what the change. Nor do they fully understand the damage they are doing to their own industry.

Even with the paranoia that surrounds this mysterious loophole, CLIA remains unchanged in their direction and accreditation program. News of CLIA training and certification programs across the country with no less than 85 in-market training events in the first quarter of 2009 were released this week in various trade publications.

Likewise, YTB has also produced various newsletters and PDF’s, (check your Travel Compass or my free newsletter) on how to apply and achieve these new requirements. Stacey Stroud and Jeanie Sharpless recorded a step-by-step conference call for applying and renewing CLIA credentials, and how these new requirements enhance your travel business. And as an added bonus, if you haven’t seen them yet, there are a couple of streaming videos with interviews (found on the top Menu Bar of your Travel Portal) from both Marc Mancini who produced YTB’s E-Campus Training, and Dan Adams from TheAcademy.com. Both these interviews were recorded during YTB’s Funshine Travel Trade Show at the Gaylord Palms late last year.

In addition, and since nobody appears to be talking about it out there on the internet, (although there is quite a buzz within the YTB ranks) there are those that have already achieved the requirements as early as January 8th, 2009. Enter Ms. Stephens who was featured (and archived in your back office via the Travel Compass) who was the first YTB RTA to complete the CLIA Accreditation.

Being CLIA certified has helped me grow my YTB business. I have learned how to more effectively find the groups and gain the re-booking for the next year. I love cruising and I will continue to book group cruises as they pay big! I feel all RTAs should be CLIA certified as it really helps you to know how to qualify your groups and the knowledge also helps you in booking and resolving any issues that may come up. It gives you more confidence in handling the group. I have also completed the E-Campus training with YTB and it has really helped me on the travel side. I recommend everyone complete these classes. The travel training in the travel portal is just a wonderful tool as I have completed 15 Travel Agent University Courses and I continue to take courses to learn more about the exciting travel industry.

I have to question this idea and the spin that you just can’t get quality travel training in a Travel MLM.

Seriously question it.

I honestly don’t know, nor is it under my control if some will ever come to grips that anyone who enters the travel industry has the same level playing field when it comes to training. All you really have to do is look at CLIA’s new requirements in the spirit it was intended. Likewise, once you’ve decided to join a company such as YTB, and actually plug into the various training programs and formats offered you’ll find it’s no different from any other company out there. In fact, I’d challenge anyone to find any special designation or difference with CLIA with any travel company or model.

Some have already tried, and found out differently. And if your still not sure, I can assure you that Jim Smith, CTIE with CLIA is more than capable of setting the record straight. He and I did have a brief phone conversation concerning any misgivings or spin to the contrary.

My recommendation concerning any loophole you may have heard about or read about…if it aint right, don’t do it.

Hummm…where have we heard that before?
