YTB Travel Agents Learn, Grow and Expand

I participate in a private group on Facebook with other YTB Travel Agents. It’s one of the few places on the Internet we can discuss business openly without the fear of some jerk taking what’s said out of context or flat out rearranging our words to promote another agenda.

Instead, the group has been able to stay private (and therefore amazingly on topic) to discuss all things related to travel and servicing our clients. One of our Agents gave a review last week after sailing Carnival Splendor’s special one-night-only event which celebrated Splendor’s return to Long Beach for her regularly-scheduled series of 7-day Mexican Riviera sailings. (You may recall Splendor made International news last fall when it was disabled by an engine-room fire.) They were impressed with the ship and with Gerry Cahill, CEO of Carnival who thanked everyone for selling Carnival.

When Kim Sorensen announced the Home Office would be going virtual instead of live to save money for this year’s Funshine event, Agent’s in the group got together to create our own live event in Las Vegas the weekend before. We’ve shared ideas about which vendors we’d like to see there, and most of the Agents have had a grand time planning the event. Of course, the cost of doing something like this lies upon the Agents themselves. Because we’re successful business owners, we not only understand the concept, but appreciate what goes into organizing and planning an event like this.

The group also supports one another. If someone needs help with a particular niche – all they have to do is ask the group. One of the other members of the group will chime in to offer their assistance. We are free and open to discuss all ideas which has been invaluable in opening up new marketing ideas and offers for clients looking for new adventures.

To qualify as a member of this group, you must be a YTB Travel business owner that has taken the First Class Training and/or e-Campus Training. We don’t discuss ZamZuu (although there is another private group for that side of the business) and this isn’t about “recruiting”.

This group is about travel – and I absolutely love it.

It’s also a place where we can celebrate our success in this business as Travel Agents. Someone books a large group cruise – we’re all there to congratulate them. Last week I saw a link from one of our own who was featured on the morning news in Las Vegas as an expert guest to offer Travel Agent advice. (Segment below.)

This isn’t the first time one of our own has been featured on television or in print with YTB Travel Network. (Before the 2009 Convention, Travel Agent Central contacted yours truly for an interview – so it does happen.) But what I really like about this interview – is it’s all about travel.

Some will tell you that travel is dead within our company. Others will tell you that it’s all about recruiting. For them, I’m quite certain that assertion makes them feel better. For the rest of us however that don’t get all worked up about misguided issues and fabricated events, we see things in a more accurate light. YTB Travel Agents are not only alive, but doing very well these days thank you very much.

Clearly, for our clients, suppliers, and this news organization it makes no difference which host agency you align yourself with. It’s up to you to create your own value as a “Travel Agent” to the general public regardless of how industry insiders perceive how we conduct our business. Travel Agent isn’t a credential you carry, or a host you align yourself with. It’s how you present yourself and service your clients that really counts. (Who knew?)

Congratulations to YTB’s new “Travel Agents”

Since day one with YTB, I’ve considered myself a “Travel Agent”. Not because I had any special training, achieved any special credentials, or aligned myself with any specific host. It was an attitude that I had when I joined. I was about as green as they came when I joined YTB, but I did have a passion for travel and a desire to learn that got me to the point that I am today. I’ve heard over and over that unless I align myself with one of those legitimate hosts out there, that I’d never be considered a “Travel Agent”.

Yet, the folks with all the arrogance and attitude – haven’t actually experienced the service and value I bring to my clients.

Funshine_geobowl6Fact is, anyone can become a “Travel Agent” with the proper mindset and willingness to learn and it doesn’t matter what company you align yourself with. Other than my family, 99.9% of our clients have no idea who or what YTB is. All they know is Doug and Ronda with BandBVacations.com. If a client has a change in schedule, a problem with a booking, or happen to need assistance with arrangements, the “Agent” they call is us, not the Home Office.

That being said, having the mindset of “Travel Agent” isn’t going to cut the mustard when it comes to servicing our clients. We could have all the love and passion in the world – but without the proper knowledge to actually assist our clients, mindset alone is moot.

It also takes knowledge and training to drive this business and make it a success.

When YTB launched the E-Campus training two years ago with theAcademy.com and Dr. Marc Mancini, I was ecstatic. At the time, it was a major advancement and move towards training our sales force. The move was also “pro-active”, being launched before all the attention and fuss in the news and media publications came out about YTB being some sort of “card mill”. (A term and definition we still don’t answers for two years later.)

Like Carnival Corporation, Apple Vacations, Pleasant Holidays, Collette, World Choice, Globus, and other preferred suppliers who do business with YTB, Dr. Mancini saw something in YTB that lead to this training to help the company achieve its long term goal of being a dominant force in the travel industry.

If you’re going to partner with someone, they might as well be the best. Here’s a little bio that I picked up on Dr. Mancini two years ago.

What’s even more impressive is that the YTB E-Campus program is designed by Dr. Marc Mancini, one of the travel industry’s most highly respected speakers, educators and consultants and authors of such books as Conducting Tours: A Practical Guide, Cruising: A Guide to the Cruise Line Industry, and Selling Destinations: Geography for the Travel Professional. Dr Mancini and his firm are the creative force behind some of the best-known and most successful training programs in the business including training programs for CLIA, AAA, and NTA.

What YTB did was land the industries leading authority in travel to design and implement a very intensive and thorough training program that covers the following 10 segments.

Not too shabby for some rinky-dink MLM that has no interest in Travel huh? Fact is, those who claim YTB doesn’t offer training haven’t been paying attention to the facts. Instead, they choose to ignore any type of training to keep their fantasy over YTB being less than legitimate alive.

We posted a list of those who completed the E-Campus training this past weekend in our newsletter. If you’re a YTB TSO or Rep and you’d like a listing to view, please get signed up on our list. I don’t think it’s appropriate to post this list publicly. With all the attention and animosity from a very small and childish group in the travel industry who have nothing better to do it will simply create more spin and turn this significant accomplishment into something it’s not.

For those who did complete this training, you know who you are. You know the value of knowledge and learning. I commend you for taking responsibility and ownership of your travel business. You can now not only call yourself “Travel Agent”, but earn an above average commission percentage found in the industry. (Industry average being 74%.)

YTB Launches RPM Trainings

After the close of Funshine last weekend, YTB launched a new training program on Sunday for Reps and Associates – Regional Product Marketing (RPM) Training. YTB is very proud of all the training programs they provide, as they should. The trainings I’ve attended and produced by YTB rivals any trainings I’ve ever participated in for content and curriculum in any industry let alone travel. I’ve been with YTB for several years now, and with every new training YTB creates, they take what they’ve been able to learn from the past to enhance the new trainings and curriculum with better features, content, and presentations to ensure what’s being taught is relevant, fresh and current.

The new RPM curriculum takes the best aspects of the live trainings such as the old CRTA that YTB once held across cities all over the country and has enhanced it’s mission and purpose.

The mission of this program is to educate and equip our Reps to effectively sell the YTB suite of products and to build a successful sales organization.

Don’t mistake this for another version of the CRTA however. There are several key aspects of the RPM Training that set RPM apart. With all the changes, enhancements, and upgrades YTB has experienced over the last two years the company has created a training program that provides information and how-to’s for YTB 2.0. What’s even more impressive, RPM is designed to be updated and enhanced on a weekly basis to provide the participants with the most relevant information available at that time. The only common thread between the CRTA and RPM trainings are they’re both live, and they’re both local.

There are four major categories with the new 4 1/2 hour RPM training that will provide a little insight into what this training program is all about.

  1. What we sell – travel, shopYTB.
  2. How to sell it
  3. How to build a team
  4. Compensation and how to get to Coach’s Corner.

With the advent of First Class Training last year, the completion of E-Campus this summer, supplier seminars provided at Funshine this past weekend, and the plethora of travel related webinars, Seminars @ Sea, and live trainings provided by the industry and various associations, RPM is designed for the new Associate and Rep in our business. While RPM provides an overview of hundreds of suppliers YTB partners with, this new training is not designed for the Travel Store Owner, but for the Associate and Rep.

Nor is RPM designed for anyone outside the company. In the past, the CRTA trainings were a great way to show prospects our product and company culture free of charge. Not so with RPM. For each RPM, participants not only need to register in their back office for the local Trainings, but also pay a $45 registration fee in advance for the 4 1/2 hour trainings. That being said – I can’t think of a better way to get a new Associate off on the right foot with a $45 investment to provide the proper product knowledge and effective marketing techniques.

The goal here is to provide current and relevant content for anyone who wants to learn how to build an organization. YTB will follow this new training program very closely, with pre and post meetings, participant surveys, and continued trainer and field input to ensure accuracy and relevancy. With YTB’s Franchise Model just over the horizon and the opportunity it provides, YTB has been proactive with RPM with this key component in the transition to a Franchise model. The new RPM training not only updates Associates and Reps about YTB 2.0, but is flexible enough to provide both effective communication tool and the proper training program as the Franchise model begins to roll out in 2010.

Case in point. The first RPM training course was held in front of 300 registered participants last Sunday in Orlando. Participants have already enrolled in two more RPM Trainings this upcoming weekend in Irvine and San Fransisco, California. Based on company, field, and trainer input, close to 20 slides have been updated with new information for the trainings this upcoming weekend. As YTB continues to roll out RPM later this month in Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, Detroit, and Newark NJ, and additional RPM trainings scheduled for November in Tampa, Dallas, Las Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, and Denver, more changes will be made as YTB updates it’s systems and processes.

The best part about RPM…it’s live and in living color.

Don’t get me wrong, I love technology and how easy it is for us to learn and obtain knowledge remotely. The First Class Training launched in October of last year, The Academy’s E-Campus courses designed by industry veteran Marc Mancini, and the regular Thursday night Training Calls with suppliers were all designed to provide training for our Travel Store Owners. While I find each of these training modules both effective and well done, it can’t compare with “live” events YTB once held via the CRTA’s or currently do with YTB University or the supplier seminars conducted at both the YTB Convention and Funshine.

These live events provide interaction and the ability to ask questions that you just can’t get via the remote trainings. (Although there are ideas to address that shortcoming.) RPM will also provide participants with a class of Certified Company Trainers (48 currently) who have gone through a the proper certification process to ensure that RPM will maintain it’s high standards and mission as it moves forward. With all due respect the the CRTA trainings once held by YTB, some of the trainings provided by a few Directors were not up to company standards. I’ve seen a big movement in trainings across the board on what has become known as “Train the Trainer” and YTB has picked up on this idea for it’s own RPM trainings to ensure relevancy, accuracy, and the proper information designed for the field by the company.

I’m also looking forward to the smaller venues that should provide better retention and interaction between the participants and the trainers. While it’s impressive to see a room filled with 1000 people, the size of RPM has been shaved to possibly 100 registrants after this first wave of trainings roll out across the country. RPM will also look at a few secondary markets like Austin, TX and Montgomery, AL to provide easy access to these emerging markets within YTB.

My hats off the Founders and Executives in the company and especially Derek Avera for this new RPM training. Like most of the new trainings YTB launches, Derek was key in the design and launch of the new RPM training. He first came on the scene with a viable answer to our Travel Training with First Class for new TSO’s last year. With RPM now launched for Associates and Reps in the field with it’s new design and content, it should prove to be a major component in YTB’s dominance in the industry.

K.I.S.S.

When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found out that the pens would not work at zero gravity (ink will not flow down to the writing surface). To solve this problem, it took them one decade and $12 million. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 degrees C.

kiss1What did the Russians do to solve the same problem?

They used a pencil.

One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soapbox, which happened in one of Japan ‘s biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soapbox that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soapbox went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the problem.

Engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soapboxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty. No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they spent an exorbitant amount tf money to do so.

But when a rank-and-file employee in a small company was posed with the same problem, he didn’t use X-rays and cameras, but instead bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soapbox passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.

When I sobered up some 20 years ago everyone, including myself at the time spent a considerable amount of time discussing and contemplating what it would take to become one of those “old timers” in AA. When I was fresh out of rehab I joined a Home Group up in Pittsburgh that had one of those “old timers” in it. His name was Sam P. and at the time, he had been sober for some 25 years. Sam was great, and everyone looked up to him and boy did he have some stories. (We all did.) We hung on his every word and constantly asked what it would take for us to become an old timer like he was.

His response was classic, and I can still hear his high pitched sarcastic voice all these years later when he would reply with:

“Don’t pick up, and don’t die!”

I guess after 20 years of not picking up, and the fact that I’m still here is proof that his very simple method works. There isn’t a day the goes by that I don’t think about being a recovering alcoholic, but I can’t remember the last time I craved a drink or a drug. It’s just not an option any longer.

Now I drink Kool-Aid, and frankly, it’s a much better alternative than the poison I use to consume. It clouded my judgment and made me paranoid. I would also obsess over the smallest of things, always focused on the problem, never the solution.

I also learned about K.I.S.S. in AA. If you don’t know, K.I.S.S. stands for Keep It Simple Stupid. Today I can spot within seconds how some can make things much harder than they need to be, and have a tendency to complicate things. I guess they need to prove either to themselves or someone else that they’re smarter than everyone else. Sometimes it can be extremely funny, but more times than not, it’s rather sad to watch, knowing there is a solution out there, and it’s much simpler than most could conceive.

I’m constantly told by others how to fix the issues with YTB. Oddly enough, most of the criticism and comments come from people who don’t have any practical experience on the MLM side of our business that can offer anything worth while. Yet their focus, attention, and problems are always on the MLM side of our business. It’s a huge distraction for most and emotions can run very high causing some really nasty conversations that honestly don’t do anything more than make one side feel better about themselves while they attempt to shame the other side into submission.

That being said, the answer for YTB lies on the non MLM side of our business, the one you actually pay for, the one that’s set up like any other host agencies out there. (Nexion comes to mind.)

The answer is simple, sell travel.

Mind you, selling travel will not put to rest and resolve anything for some. Some I’m afraid might never come to grips that YTB is a part of the travel industry and will never accept any of it’s members as peers. Honestly, I don’t know why those opinions really matter, being as miserable as they are. (Who wants to hang with attitudes like that??) But for those who can look at the facts, for those who don’t need to make excuses, or try to spin and justify things in order to simply belittle and malign, most will look at Travel Weekly, notice what Carnival is doing, and pick up how YTB lookes and acts like a bonified Host.

Keep it simple. Focus on the main goal from our Founders, and that’s to be the number one Travel Agency in the world. Oddly enough, you need to sell travel in order to do that. (Who knew??) By doing so, it will resolve the problems and issues of those who matter, and for the ones who don’t matter…well there’s really not much we can do now is there? So why worry about it?

I know of some who are still carrying around resentment and anger over what happened to them some 20 years ago when AL Williams took over the Insurance Industry. Can you imagine? Who wants to live like that? I sure don’t, and if you think you can learn something from anyone who does, you’re sadly mistaken.

Let it go already, and Keep It Simple Stupid.

First Class

I can still remember the first time I saw the YTB booking engine. My wife called me at work and told me to take a look at the site. It took me all of about a millisecond to know that I wanted to find out more about who this company was, and what it had to offer. Back then, you really couldn’t find anything about YTB. It was difficult to do any type of research over the internet about the company. I do recall finding a couple posts about how some considered the company nothing more that one of those “pyramid deals”. Even then, I was able to see through the ignorance and hype, and wanted to verify on my own what the company was all about.

Many who are currently with YTB have no idea what the booking engine looked like “back in the day”. A couple weeks ago while browsing some old photos, I found a screen capture from April of 2005 and to look at the booking engine today, you certainly wouldn’t see what I saw in the company back then.

I wrote a little bit on Friday about how you need to constantly monitor and check your course, then make adjustments accordingly based on the current conditions you find. Those of you who subscribe to my newsletter were able to listen to a conference call with Scott Tomer who told us that for the first time we have a clear understanding of what California really wants. More importantly, we know how to address California based on the discussions we’ve had and this weekend we’ve seen our first glimpse of the result of those discussions.

First Class Training.

I couldn’t tell you how many people were actually bombarding the servers of the First Class Training on Saturday, but the training modules being served up were obviously pushing bandwidth to the limits. While Sunday seemed to be somewhat better, personally, I found the only time feasible to enjoy these courses was early Sunday morning. It will be interesting to see if we can get an actually number, and I’m betting it will be in the tens of thousands.

About all I could think of while watching these training modules was how much trouble our critics will be in now that we have this very thorough and leading edge training available to us via a few mouse clicks. Most of the issues that you find our critics complaining and crying about are directly addressed in these modules, and to make matters even worse for them, it’s by far the most thorough training I’ve seen from any single industry supplier or association in all the years I’ve been attending industry events, seminars, and trainings.

The courses included video modules form CLIA, Marc Mancini, along with Carnival, Pleasant Holidays, Oceana, Globus, and other vendors. To see how these industry leaders took the time to be filmed and offer up their experience and expertise in the industry for YTB spoke volumes about what they think of our company. (Although some will lead you to believe they feel differently.)

Other features that impressed me were the quality of videos themselves. Done in wide screen and in high definition with professional film crews and editing scored very high marks for me. The entire course is extremely professional and broadcast quality.

Some may find it odd or out of character that something was noticeably missing in this updated training. The “R” word. You know the one I’m talking about, because of the huge phobia that surrounds it.

“Recruiting”.

Nope. Not one mention of that aspect of our business, nor were Coach and Scott even seen or heard from during the entire training. To have YTB talk for close to 4 hours and not even mention the Rep side of the business could be equated to a fish being out of water.

This was all about travel, from some of the best in the business, and the only company that has this comprehensive overview of the entire industry is YTB. I love what Marc Mancini said in his interview concerning the “E-Campus” courses he’s put together for YTB. “The educational training and learning landscape has changed because of technology.” The Travel Weekly Leisure Summit is a perfect example of this, (both Marc and Kim will be participating) and probably a big reason why Travel Weekly described Kim as one of ‘three people who are defining the contemporary landscape for home agents…’

A new day has dawned in YTB, and while our critics will continue their attempt to shame and embarrass anyone involved in YTB, you as an RTA now have First Class Training to arm yourself in everything travel related to become just as knowledgeable, and just as competent as they claim to be.

Please don’t mistake or misconstrue that as First Class being the ONLY course you need to take in order to achieve your goals as a Travel Agent. That however will become evident as you work your way through the modules. It is however, the best foundational tool I’ve ever seen in the industry to enable you to chart a course that will rival any industry veteran out there.

Come to think of it. If our critics who claim to be embarrassed or insulted by YTB RTA’s not knowing anything about the travel industry would simply point those they find to YTB’s First Class Training, many of their problems would be resolved. Me thinks however, they’re far more comfortable simply complaining and pointing out what’s wrong instead of working on a solution.

You in YTB however, know how to pick up the ball. If you’ve already taken the course like I have, you know how valuable this is, so maybe you can offer up the support to your fellow RTA’s our critics find and help them get on course with this foundational tool.

How nice it is to have such an outstanding and powerful program to help take care of our own.
