Two weeks ago, YTB Travel Network launched a  weekly webcast available from within its travel portal. What they created was travel training news show all about travel for travel agents.

Imagine that – a program about travel. It’s called “Your Travel Blueprint” and is YTB Travel Network’s very own news show created by our Travel Department for our RTA’s and Travel Agents.

If you’re familiar with ZamNuuz – you already know the type of format we’re talking about. Your Travel Blueprint however, is produced, designed, and segmented for travel tips, tricks, and valuable insight on how to build and grow your “travel business”.

Each week, beginning Thursday at 5:00 pm Central, 6:00 pm Eastern a brand new weekly program will be aired from the travel portal for our valued RTA’s and Travel Agents. The weekly program will then loop continuously throughout the week, giving YTB agents the opportunity to catch the show at their convenience all week long.

If you’re serious about building anything you need a blueprint – a plan. Your Travel Blueprint will bring content, vendor profiles, along with tips and tricks in a fun and easy way to give agents the tools they need to build a viable and profitable travel business.

You can catch the current episode of Your Travel Blueprint right now by logging into the YTB Travel Portal and clicking the logo to watch the show. A new show will air beginning at 5:00 pm Central, 6:00 pm Eastern tonight.

No more excuses – If you want to find out what’s going on with YTB Travel – this would be the place.

Your Travel Blueprint will not replace the YTB Travel Compass, the vast amount of content found in your back office in the media center, nor will it replace the weekly vendor webinars, FAM’s and Seminars @ Sea offered in the Travel Industry. Nor do we believe that [yet another] source of travel related information provided by YTB Travel is overkill.

YTB Travel Network always has – and always will be about “travel”. I know there are a few remaining stragglers who still can’t comprehend the distinction after all these years. (Giving credence to the quote “you can’t fix stupid”.) Truth is, YTB Travel Network took advantage of the huge paradigm shift from Brick and Mortar to Click and Order at the turn of the Century. Today, four of the top ten travel agencies are internet booking engines booking nearly $50 billion annually. It should also be noted that Expedia is now king of the hill, knocking off American Express and Carlson Wagonlit from a decade long hold at number one and number two.

As the travel industry continues to evolve and change – YTB Travel Network isn’t going to sit back on it’s heals and relish in our accolades or success – finding our own company in the middle of Travel Weekly’s Power Rankings. Always new. Always innovative. Always leading the way in how travel is sold and consumed that’s relevant to today’s changing market.

If you’re serious about selling travel and building your travel business – YTB Travel Network would be the ONLY place to offer this type of training and information on a weekly basis. (AND IT’S FREE!)

Folks, no other Host Agency does this – no other agency provides so many sources of training and information for its members. It’s why we believe YTB Travel Network is the best “host agency” out there – all you have to do is apply the information that’s presented in a format that’s best suited to you.

So go check it out now – and keep up to date with all the latest industry information and upgrades that will be coming your way with YTB Travel Network.

Now THIS Is How It’s Done…

Think back to last week when we gave yet another example of our exemplary “Travel Professionals” and their bizarre behavior.

Since we spent time highlighting how poorly one segment of our industry can behave, I thought I’d spend an equal amount of time highlighting a perfect example of how another segment can respond. What’s even cooler – it comes pretty close to what I suggested as a viable solution for our “Professionals” last week, and how they should respond to the iTrek promotion about them being – well – “dead”.

There’s a right way to do things – and a wrong way. The wrong way leaves everybody involved feeling bitter and angry – which also leaves the industry exhausted and void of any hope.

The right way is getting some pretty good press with people talking – and laughing.

I first found this story on Twitter from PhoCusWright. (we’ve written about PhoCusWright before) We’ve all seen the “Bags Fly Free” promotions of Southwest Airlines. I’m not so sure you’ve seen the latest in this series of commercials. (I know I haven’t – but I don’t watch that much TV.)

The latest installment entitled ‘Battle Cry’ (shown left) highlights the now familiar Southwest baggage handlers who charge another airplane on the apron, only to flash passengers on another airline with individual letters painted on their bellies – which spell out the words “Bags Fly Free”.

It should be noted that the “competing airline” wasn’t blatantly obvious to the average viewer, but it was pointed out that the airline that Southwest baggage handlers “flashed” was Airtran. (The logo was blocked out on the plane in the commercial.)

As thing often do, word began to spread about this new Southwest commercial and questions and rumors began to circulate that Southwest was “dissing” Airtran.

Airtran had a couple of choices here.

They could have reacted like our “travel professionals” as petty and angry to strike an attack on Southwest with a bunch of bad press and move to “out” Southwest for the commercial.

Or respond with its own internal commercial which pokes fun at Southwest.

It should be noted that Airtran has not made any public statement about the commercial – but instead responded on its internal website for Airtran employees to view. (In other words, you won’t see this on TV) It also added this statement with the following video to the Airtran family:

“We’ve heard from many Crew Members from around the country about a funny ad currently running on network TV. We’ve been asked again and again how we planned to respond. Well, we thought about it and thought about it and decided to not respond at all. After all, focusing on running the best low-cost carrier in America is enough to keep us busy.

BUT…if we were to respond, it might look something like this:

Thanks to all of our volunteer Crew Members for donning these costumes and playing along. Your dedication to AirTran and your performance was truly MMMOOOOOOOving.”

It’s obvious that there’s no need for Airtran to get bitter or angry because Airtran happens to have viable service and sufficient market that flies with them. In other words – they’re far more secure in their own product and service than our “travel professionals” appear to be.

Does everyone need to fly with Airtran? No. They also understand that they can’t be everything to everybody. There’s more than enough market to go around, and Airtran isn’t about to take its eye off the ball simply because someone else takes a pot shot at them.

While they did spend some time putting this piece together, it’s all done in good fun and leaves everyone in a good “moooooood”. (Sorry, had to do it.)

That’s what true “professionals” do. It’s called re-framing, and good leaders know how to disarm a potentially volatile situation with grace and humor.

Now if it could only branch out to those who truly need to lighten up. They might be able to attract some positive press like this, and actually attract clients instead of pushing them away.

The only question I have is: Will they figure it out before it’s too late?

Diva Loves A Bargain

I’ve heard from critics out there that they can always get a better price somewhere else when it comes to travel. I’ve seen some really obscure examples over the years and while I’ve never claimed that I would have the absolute “best price” every single time…

I will be competitive.

Knowing our booking engine the way I do, I can find a number of “bargains” out there that give me an edge over anyone else.

Two examples I can think of off the top of my head would be booking the hotel, air, and ground transportation together. I had a client book with us because I consolidated her trip to New York over Christmas this way. I combined air, hotel and transfers for about $300 dollars less than she could find anywhere else, and upgraded her to the Millennium UN Plaza to boot, which based on her own research, was completely out of reach according to her budget.

Another great resource I have are group cruise bookings. Any time a client simply gives me a date range, I’ll scroll through our Group Bookings page to see if there might be something there that might fit. Take the first cruise on this long list of groups for example. Based on the pricing found on this site compared to what you find direct with Carnival, you’ll save over $250 per person on a category 8A by booking on the group’s page rather than going direct with Carnival or another Agent for the same cruise.

And if you run into a critic who tells you otherwise, like I’ve seen in the past, tell them to go book it. Then wait for a call back when they find out that the price they were quoted did not include port charges and taxes the way we do on the group’s page.

Works every time.

Looks like someone else has taken notice of the special deals YTB has to offer. Sue Goldstein, known as the Underground Shopper, was recently interviewed on CNN about some of the deals she’s found.

Here’s an excerpt from here site.

Sue, who has made bargain-hunting her life for almost 35 years, is the Underground Shopper® founder and hands-on guiding light. Let her lead the way through the trenches of “needless markups” and show you how to get around paying wretched retail. You don’t need a brother-in-law in the business to get it for you wholesale. You’ve got Sue Goldstein as your new best friend.

During the interview Sue gave her recommendation for finding the “best travel deals” on the internet. If you take a look at the site CNN pulled up, although it’s under a different domain name, it looks just like the one I have.

What’s up with that?

I don’t know about Sue being my new best friend, but with a last name like Goldstein, would you expect anything other than frugal?

Thanks for the plug Sue, and thanks for setting everyone straight on just who has the best travel deals out there. Critics should have a field day with this one, and honestly, I’d love to see them match witts with a woman like this. Looks to me like she has no problem calling a spade a spade. They are more than welcome to open up that can of worms by contacting Sue directly.(LOL!)

On another note, I’m going to leave you with this question:

What do the following companies have in common?

  • Carlson Wagonlit Travel
  • Choice Hotels
  • CruiseOne, Inc.
  • Discovery Map International
  • Hotel Indigo
  • Microtel Inn
  • Passport Health Communications
  • Thetravelacademy
  • Uniglobe Travel International
  • Your Travel Biz

I’ll have the answer for you here tomorrow for the inquiring minds that want to know.

By the way…I claim no responsibility concerning last night’s Steeler victory over Washington on Monday Night Football and any connection to today’s Presidential Election. I realize how superstitious some people are, but suggest you get out and and place your own vote anyway.

Bummer…

I really couldn’t tell you if this was a snub or not, but apparently I’ve been passed over this week. Not even so much as an honorable mention for “YTB Video Week” on the blogs.

We’ve all seen them. The YouTube craze has been going on for some time and now anyone can make their own superstar videos and post them for everyone to see on the internet. All you need is a computer and web cam.

Some may not know this, but I actually have a College Degree in Audio/Video Production. Back in 1989 I decided it was time to get an actual degree. I had attempted to acquire a degree in “Partying 101” back in the early 80’s but was informed by the University that they didn’t offer said degree, (like hell…everyone had at least a Minor in it.) but alas, when I went back almost a decade later, financed by myself instead of my parents, things turned out quite differently.

If you would have told me that I could actually graduate college with honors back in high school, I would have told you that the idea was a complete joke.

After dropping out of college in the early 80’s, I found the perfect job and had all the proper qualifications as a party hardy “Radio DJ” which was great fun, very glamorous, but also extremely unstable. Once I found myself wanting to advance in the industry, I needed to have a degree in order to attain the Program Director status I was seeking.

It was there that I found not only did I have a keen ear for sound, but an equally keen eye for sight and the combination was exhilarating. I spent the next several years locked up in video editing rooms and had an absolute blast.

To this day, I still dabble with this type of production work for both audio and video. Now that computers are actually powerful enough to handle the large video files and I can produce some good quality home made videos for a nominal cost.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of YouTube. Most of the videos found on the site, frankly…they suck. I realize it’s my own interpretation and opinion, but when I look at any video I’m more interested in audio, video, framing and editing qualities. The content can be absolutely spot on, but if the presentation doesn’t fit my level of expectancy, personally I have a hard time with the entire message.

That being said, I have to wonder, with my own personal opinions aside, why in the world MY videos were “overlooked” this week on the blog.

Where they only YouTube specific?
Did I not feature enough “travel”?
Did I talk too much about “recruiting”?
Was the sales pitch too “in your face”?
Was it perceived as a “hard sell”?
Did it consist of too many lies?
How ‘bout misinformation?
Was it too outside the box?

Oh…I get it…maybe they couldn’t find it?

What ever it is, maybe I can fix it to meet the fine and upstanding standards others uphold in order to be worthy of being highlighted on someone else’s blog. At the very least, somebody could download the thing and send it the Attorney Generals office for review. They might find it very informative and it could help your case that YTB’s nothing more than a gigantic pyramid scheme.

One can always hope…

Carnival Cruise To Nowhere – Stranded at Sea! @ Yahoo! Video

For a written review of this cruise, with more of the same old lies, recruiting pitch, and unprofessionalism that is associated with those of us in YTB, feel free to send this review to the AG as well.
