I love the Christmas Season. While I love the Season, it’s also the most hectic time of year for our family – especially this year.

The business venture we took over back in August has compounded our busy schedule but has also paid off in spades. We just finished up on a six week mission to reach out to and service every single location we have in time for Christmas. While we worked double time the last six weeks, the kids had several events going on with school and extracurricular activities that added to our busy schedule.

At times – we didn’t know which end was up.

The hectic schedule finally wound to a close on Friday, and by the time you read this, we’ll be off on a two week vacation with family. Long breaks like this is one of the many perks of the business, and it’s why we committed to working so hard that last six weeks.

While we’ll be vacationing the next two weeks, both Ronda and I are way behind on our goal setting that we do each and every year. It’s a habit that we’ve always done, but really didn’t take seriously until we got involved with YTB. It was one of the many tools we bought into in order to achieve success.

Overall both of us agree that 2011 far exceeded our wildest expectations and dreams. So much so – the future’s so bright…

We gotta wear shades.

(Oh COME ON! You had to of known it was coming.)

With the current year coming to a rapid close, we’ll be setting aside time the next two weeks to take a look at 2012 and beyond to dream and strategize about what we’d like to accomplish and what our world should look like.

Both Ronda and I are dreamers. On top of dreaming big – we also believe that somehow – some way the resources and avenues will find its way to us to make it happen. The most difficult part of the whole process is having the patience and persistence to follow through and take the appropriate action to make it all happen.

We’ve heard it time and time again, and I’m sure you have too at one time or another:

“Never – Ever – Give Up.”

I have to admit – there were times that a comment like that felt like lip service. I mean, I heard it, but the words didn’t have the impact that was intended, because I was still in the thralls of reaching for my goals but not quite achieving them.

If you’re feeling like that at this time of year, I want to ask you – actually I really need to beg you – “Never give up.”

Now – I don’t want to come across as hype or some pie in the sky dreamer. I can assure you, that I’ve been there – done that – and even have a T-shirt that says so. I know how the mind can play it’s tricks and that voice can be so loud that it can cancel things out.

But I want you to do this before the new year – because it’s probably one of the most important steps you can do to create a world that’s so bright – you’ll be wearing those shades.

I have a close friend who really helped me with this and most of you may remember Andy Cauthen. If you didn’t know Andy – you should have. Andy was President & COO of YTB Marketing, Inc. and a very dear and close friend. One of Andy’s legacies, was a popular series or course that he produced a number of years ago and caught fire on the subject of “Goal Setting“. It’s one of the finest and most thorough pieces we’ve ever read on the subject.

Andy not only goes into how to set goals, but the type of goals you should be thinking about. It’s a time to dream – and dream big.

Why is this step of goal setting so important? Try this exercise the next time you work on a jigsaw puzzle. Turn all the pieces over, and attempt to complete it upside down. Fact is – the pictures on the other side make a huge difference in completing the puzzle. And that’s what goal setting does – completes a picture. Think about it. You don’t take a trek across the country without a road map do you? You don’t build a house without a set of blueprints, right?

Far too many people actually plan to fail because the fail to plan.

If you want your future to be bright and full of promise – both Ronda and I want to invite you to take some time before the new year to set some goals and work out a plan. Neither one of us can truly express how much it’s meant to both of us. Not only in our professional lives – but our personal life including our family and our marriage.

If you’ve never done something like this – it’s time to start. But only if you really want to enjoy your life and be all you can be.

You only get one shot at this journey we call life – so why not take some time to plan it out so you can really – truly enjoy it?

Who knows you might be wearing the same shades and singing the same tune we are this time next year!

I found a really a really nice article in Travel Weekly this weekend that highlights YTB and our Passport to Giving program.

If you don’t know about Passport to Giving, it’s one of the finest programs I’ve seen. Coach and YTB designed it for non-profits to help raise money by turning the non-profit members vacations into donations. I was actually trained in this program back in 2005 before I was trained as an RTA.

YTB donates a booking engine to the non-profit or association a custom site with their own logo free of charge, which includes waiving the monthly fee. Members of the association then turn to the non-profits travel web site to book travel and the commissions earned are paid to the association just like they are to the RTA’s, but tax free.

No strings, no catch, just our way to give back to the community by offering something totally unique to help raise money for non-profits.

According to the Travel Weekly article, the National Academy Foundation is operating an online travel agency for Freshman and Sophomores at Rochester’s East High using our Passport to Giving program and YTB Booking Engine to train students with real world examples and booking travel for real customers. Classes help prepare the students of East High for a potential carrier in the Travel Industry.

Now in it’s second year, the students earned about $2500 in commissions their first year. The facilitator of the program, Jim Spawton, is looking to boost that number to about $10,000 by asking the faculty, students’ families and local businesses for bookings that earn real commissions for the Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. The commissions earned help pay for other student programs, all while teaching students what it’s like to run a real travel business.

East High is one of the 78 U.S. high schools with hospitality and tourism academies that are overseen by the National Academy Foundation.

Other big name companies such as Marriott and PepsiCo are also helping students of the academy. PepsiCo gave $7,000 to six graduates to further their studies, while Marriott offers internships to students to help them attain real world experience inside their hotels. A picture posted in the Travel Weekly article also has students working with the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.

I applaud both YTB and the National Academy Foundation for offering these programs to our future business men and woman.

While researching this article, I found a great “about us” video from the NAF.org website that highlights this important non-profit and how it’s changing our youth for the better. A great example can be found at about the 3 minute mark with a young lady named Nathsha who apparently started as an intern with Marriott and is now an Assistant Controller at the Bethesda Marriott Suites.

UPDATE: Apparently, the constipation over YTB continues for one Anti-YTB Zealot. It’s been a long time since I’ve linked to anything this moron has written, but this one is just too classic to pass up.

Yes, John Frenaye has also found the Travel Weekly article, only to react with his own demonic twist and spin that no doubt matches all the classic myths, misrepresentations, and false claims we’ve come to know, but not quite love about this ignorant and constipated know-it-all.

I don’t know about you – but I’d love to take him up on his bet regarding the Facilitator being a member of YTB. Unfortunately,  we’ve learned John never delivers (just like he never properly researches) when shown point blank that he’s once again on loosing end of such unsubstantiated speculation and claims.

John, maybe the reason they didn’t pick you or any other “agency” is because you can’t get past your own dysfunctional behavior and limiting beliefs. Hell, you don’t even know the difference between a FAM and an internship. (Or who sponsors the internship you ignorant putz.)

Instead of being privileged like you were growing up – maybe a program like NAF could have shown you how the real world operates to provide you with the proper skill set to cope with life’s most basic lessons. Guys like me valued opportunities like this no matter who offered the tools or the opportunity. The internship I did with Pittsburgh’s number one radio station after college was invaluable to me back in the day.

After four years of blathering like a raving lunatic about MLM and YTB – it’s apparent that the travel industry desperately needs some fresh minds and faces that are capable of working instead of spiting at people and companies they don’t agree with, don’t like, and clearly are unwilling to accept as part of the solution.

Off on a weeks’ vacation with extended family this week. We have a nephew who is graduating High School and it was a perfect excuse to get everyone together at one of our favorite vacation spots – in Williamsburg, Virginia. He’s the youngest of my sister’s kids and as you can see below, we won’t have another High School graduation in the family for at least another decade.

I practically grew up around this area as a kid. My Grandparents lived in the surrounding area during my childhood and we loved to spend weeks at a time with them just south of here, in Newport News and Norfolk, Virginia. I have many very fond memories of Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown which we looked forward to every year. When we got older, Busch Gardens opened up at just the right time. (We were just too cool for Williamsburg and Jamestown at the time.)

Our own kids have only been to the area a handful of times since they were born. While we do spend at least one week with both sides of the family for vacation, we spend the time at different locations for the week. I have to admit however; Williamsburg is one of the more comfortable and relaxing vacation spots because I know the area so well. There’s plenty to do, and it’s fun seeing the area again through a child’s eyes. (Although some of the better attractions are still ahead of us later in the week.)

Some of the best family memories have also been here. One of the reasons is due to a video I filmed and edited more than 10 years ago. (Summer of 2000) While the week long events were edited down to just 15 minutes, the entire video was still too long to post on the internet. The clip below however, is an all-time favorite, especially for my sister’s boys who enjoyed playing golf with the adults at the time. Ten years later, they’re adults in their own right.

We’ll be back to our regular posting here on Just Picture It Now next week. This week is reserved for family time, although the computer, as always is with me during vacation time. (Wherever I go, the computer goes.)

You’ve probably noticed that gas prices are on the rise – again.

When the price of a gallon of gas exploded a couple years ago there was a huge outcry for a sustainable fuel. There were all kinds of talk and hype about ethanol, bio-diesel, hydrogen power, and electric cars. Now here we are, years later, and it sure doesn’t appear like we’re any closer to realizing the type of change we were talking about back then. At the very least, it’s been a very slow and arduous process.

Sure there have been a few stars over the last few years. Our extended family owns two Toyota Prius vehicles, which has been by far the most successful hybrid vehicle to date. Our trash has gone way down, and the recycling has gone way up. Our compost pile has also grown in size producing rich organic soil for plants inside and outside the house. As well, our security system in the house not only keeps our home secure, but helps us save costs with pre-programed lighting utilizing less power, and automated control of our heating and cooling system that also saves energy and money.

While I don’t consider myself a “tree huger” by any means – I do have an interest in doing my part in not only conserving energy, but utilizing renewable resources whenever possible. I also have my favorite front runner in bio-fuel development – algae. It grows easily, can be transported via pipes (existing pipes no less), and algae not only eats up the carbon dioxide we’ve created, but can also be located near waste-water treatment facilities, cleaning up the wastewater while at the same time producing a renewable fuel for the community.

Yes, I’ve done some study on the subject over the years.

Not that I’ve never thought about my impact on the environment, but I started giving serious interest about our carbon footprint and recycling when Ronda and I first started cruising over a decade ago. While down in the Caribbean I was impressed with how these large vessels sustained themselves. They are after all floating resorts. They also appreciate that the pristine beaches and water found down in the Caribbean can only stay that way if they take an active approach, and help passengers understand the importance of preserving these tropical destinations.

Over the years, I’ve come across news stories and watched countless documentaries that promote a greener earth. Not because I’m concerned about global warming – there’s so much data out there that it makes my head spin. For me personally, it’s more about preserving a feasible and comfortable life for my kids and grandkids. If we keep doing what we’re doing – I don’t need a news article or movie documentary to tell me there’s not going to be much left for them.

I’ve been impressed with Virgin Atlantic’s biofuel flight test a couple years ago. (Leave it to billionaire Sir Richard to be the first to do something like this.) I also loved reading about Sandals Resorts earning it’s Green Globe Certification a few years back. Hotel chains are also getting involved, like InterContinental Hotels Group who was awarded with an LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for one of its hotels.

Then this weekend, I caught a glimpse of the new Boeing 747-8, which is more ‘environmentally friendly’ (not really ‘green’) and thought to myself, why am I not writing about this kind of stuff? I mean, if I find it interesting, surely there would be others who feel the same way – right?

So I’ve decided to make a small, but noticeable shift in my writing to keep things interesting – for me. Like politics, religion, and network marketing however, just how we should take care of this world we live in can get a bit heated. The goal here isn’t to argue right or wrong, good or bad, or even better or worse. It’s simply a way for me to research and write about what I find interesting. The hope obviously is that you as the reader will too, but if not, that’s perfectly fine with me.

My hope is that I can open up minds that supporting suppliers and vendors with an eco-friendly conscious is the way to go. Over the years, there has been plenty to write about and I’m kind of bummed that I didn’t do something like this sooner. It’s a very cool industry and it needs awareness to gain support from people like me and you.

This won’t be a complete shift in direction mind you – simply a new category that I want to expand and write about. What I really like about the subject is that its solutions based – and promotes evolving technology designed to correct the harsh way we’ve treated our home for more than a century. If you know anything about me, I’m not about to shy away from taking a stand – and frankly – taking better care of the environment we all live in is important to me.

It’s a small step for me that will hopefully spread with like-minded people who care about the environment and their impact in it. It a choice I’ve made – and like most of my choices, I’m proud of it. That’s just the way I roll.

So join me as we explore a cleaner, more environmentally friendly way to travel. While I hope it becomes an option for you – the choice is entirely up to you.

For me, it’s time to focus on going green – even when I travel.

Winter officially arrives today. The winter storm that dumped on the east coast over the weekend setting record snowfalls for December from Virginia to Long Island has caught the kids attention.

Why? We’re heading up to the winter wonderland this week for our annual Christmas break.

Each year we rotate the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday’s with the kids Grandparent’s. Not that we have anything against Mema and Papa (we spent time with them over Thanksgiving) – but Christmas never really “feels” like Christmas in South Georgia. While Pittsburgh may not always have snow during this time of year, there’s always colder temperatures with warm fires, and lots of hot chocolate.

As we visit and enjoy this time with our family, I’ll be taking a break from writing this week. I do have something scheduled to post Christmas morning, which I think you’ll enjoy. Other than that…playing in the snow and spending quality time with family will consume the next week and a half.

Of course you can’t have snow, without some sledding (which we have a perfect spot for) and a good old fashion snowball fight. The big thing this year has been “My Face LOL” videos that have been going around – and I’ve caught the bug. I did one of these last week, but took some additional head shots of the family and recreated the following video. Brian, our son has taken the prize for best “face” in the family and has won the staring roll as Santa, with Brittany, Ronda, and I taking supporting roles as elf’s.

When I first saw this story in Travel Weekly about Princess doing a survey on the most stressed out cities in the US I was intrigued. I mean – cruise lines have been helping people de-stress for decades. While I wouldn’t consider this survey Pulitzer material, it’s certainly an interesting read for those of us who want to sell more vacations. (If you want Pulitzer, I’ve been telling people for over a decade that a cruise is the best vacation money can buy.)

The Princess survey was done in conjunction with Harris Interactive who specializes in custom market research. The press release also referenced Dr. Kathleen Hall, founder of The Stress Institute, who believes learning how to deal with stress is one of the most important things Americans can do to lead more balanced lives.

According to the survey the top-five things Americans feel will help them achieve better life balance include realizing financial success, improving physical fitness, getting organized and taking more breaks and vacations. Yet one in four Americans aren’t planning to take a vacation in the next year. (Siting “work-related” reasons for not taking one.) As a side note – these same Americans (particularly those living in Washington, D.C.) don’t think the President of the United States should be given any vacation days either.

Not surprising that the least stressed city in the survey has a major cruise port. (Hummmm)

I found the Princess Press release and the findings are an interesting read. Some of them include that 72 percent of Americas say they do not have balance in their lives, but there is hope. Slightly more than half believe they can achieve life balance in the next five years. The survey also noted that the poor economy is a leading causes for life imbalance, followed by the need to lose weight.

My solution to achieve life balance? I’m going to tote the Princess line here – “escape completely” on a luxury cruise liner for a week. Have someone else do the cooking and cleaning, enjoy the romance of the sea, and there’s something about the turquoise water that just soothes the soul.

Did you feel that? It’s the winds of change.

The NEW YTB booking engine came as an early Christmas present and the upgrade is now official in the US. You may or may not have heard about this and I’m only too happy to update you on advancements and upgrades from the folks in Wood River, Illinois, YTB Travel Network.

I’m sorry to inform some that “Being Powered by Travelocity” is no more. Our new platform is being serviced by Convergentware, out of Canada. (Thus why the beta testing was being done there.) While the relationships we had with both Priceline in 2005 and 2006 and World Choice (Travelocity) in 2007 and 2008 were extremely beneficial in helping the growth of our company, it’s clearly time to step up and not only own the client information, but provide better services to these clients via customer profiles.

Travel Agents are typically connected to one or more GDS systems. Today, travel content can be found outside of the GDS’s and directly via supplier websites or via direct links to suppliers’ back-end systems. (Which YTB is currently working on with its growing list of suppliers and vendors as these vendors create their own infrastructure to do so.)

This new product with Convergentware not only represents multiple GDS systems, (Global Distribution Systems) but they also seamlessly combine such GDS content with non-GDS content such as Web fares, Charter fares and Consolidator fares into one interface. There are air, car, hotel, insurance, tour, cruise and net fare modules for both client and business environments.

Convergent CRS Gateway is a back-end Centralized Reservations System (”CRS”) that is capable of searching and integrating data from the following five environments:

1. The Global Distribution Systems (“GDS”) such as Sabre, Galileo and Amadeus;
2. Travel suppliers directly via Application Programmer Interfaces (“API”);
3. Travel supplier Web sites;
4. GDS New Entrants (”GNE’s”) such as ITA Software;
5. Specialized or customized content via Convergent Publisher.

Convergent CRS technology is a global leader in automating these environments for the entire front-office to back-office reservations process which involves searching for relevant travel content, managing and attaching customer profiles to a particular reservation, and then book all the individual components of a travel reservation, including, but not limited to air, car, hotel, cruise, insurance and tour packages, ticketing specific components of a travel reservation that require ticketing in conjunction with reserving space such as air bookings.

Another nice feature I’m thrilled about is creating integrated quotes, itineraries and/or invoices regardless of where the travel content comes from. I can create and send a complete quote to a client and if they like what they see, all the client has to do is log in and pay for the trip I created for them.

How cool is that?! Talk about customer service.

The Convergent CRS Gateway powers all Convergentware front-end products such as Convergent Online and Convergent Professional. Add the power of Convergent Publisher, with its specialized content, contract and inventory management capabilities, and the Convergent CRS Gateway transforms into the leading customizable, centralized reservations system in the world. Not a penny more. (In fact, it’s on sale right now.)
