Wow! What a week!

Sorry, I haven’t been around much this week. My post on Monday got a ton of traffic and I appreciate the private messages, e-mails and phone calls. Every so often you write something that strikes a nerve and you learn to just ride that wave of traffic. I also enjoyed the break. It gave me an opportunity to do some additional reading, planning, and finish some projects that have been sitting on the back burner – but needed to get done.

As a result, I’m feeling pretty refreshed and eager to get going on some new projects that fell into my lap during the week. It’s amazing to me how you finish something up; something else opens up to fill that space. We’ll be writing more about them as the week’s progress.

I wanted to do a quick post today about a new program that I’m pretty excited about. I have a relative who’s disabled and this type of thing always peaks my interest because of it. Being disabled doesn’t mean you can’t experience life. Yes, it can make things a little more difficult, but as I’ve seen time and time again, it’s all about how you perceive things that can make a disability an obstacle or advantage.

It’s nice to see this type of program in our industry. While it’s not a niche that I’m actively involved with, I do know a number of people are. I did a search on it last night and only found one other link to it, so I thought I’d promote it, so all of you know about it in case it comes up in your dealings with clients.

Oh, and yes, that’s a real cat! (In other words, it’s not some Photoshopped prank.)

~ Guests of Beaches Turks & Caicos can now become Handicap Scuba Association (HSA) certified at the property ~

Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa has expanded resort programming for persons with disabilities and now offers a tailored disabled scuba diving program. A team of twelve dive instructors from the resort, under the guidance of Mark Rausch of Poseidon Handicap Scuba Adventures, underwent an intensive training course that will allow guests to participate in three specialized programs. Through the Handicap Scuba Association (HSA), guests can become certified in the HSA Basic Open Water Scuba Diving, the HSA Junior Open Water Scuba Diving and the HSA Open Water Dive Buddy. The resort will continue to offer the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) certification in addition to the Handicap Scuba Association certification.

Michael Clark, Beaches Resorts Water Sports Manager, stated, “Scuba diving is the sport where gravity is not an issue,” he further stated, “we are delighted to be able to offer our disabled guests the full value of our ’Luxury Included’ facility including equal water sports opportunity that caters to their special needs.”

Handicap Scuba Association is made up of over 4000 underwater educators, with disabilities and supporting members, located in over 45 countries. Beaches Turks & Caicos is the first in the Beaches Resorts chain, as well as the island of Turks & Caicos, to receive HSA certification training and marks an important milestone in disabled programming at the resort.

Orbitz Reports Net Loss of $337 Million

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Digg me

You’ve heard it, I’ve heard it – just about everyone has heard how wonderful travel sales have been from “Travel Professionals”. Even with all the doom and gloom about a recession last year.

Heck, it’s easy to say things are wonderful when you don’t have to disclose just how well you’re really doing. Very few of the world’s travel agencies are publicly traded companies and as people often do, they tell you what they want you to hear.

Looks like the truth is starting to catch up with some of these folks, as Orbitz announces a net loss of $337 million for 2009 yesterday. Net revenue just for the fourth quarter was $738 million, down 15 percent from the same period of 2008. According to m-Travel news, the losses were pinned on “removal of most domestic air booking fees and a significant reduction in hotel net revenue due to lower average daily rates, lower hotel booking fees, lower breakage and disappointing results at HotelClub.”

2009 wasn’t a very nice year for the travel industry. Royal Caribbean had problems getting financing for their new mega ship at the beginning of the year. (Although they obviously secured the financing needed eventually.) Expedia was hit with a $129 million settlement in a class action that was filed for unfair business practices. We also can’t forget how hard Mexico was hit last year with the H1N1 virus that wreaked havoc across the globe.

All while consumers saw some of the best deals seen in decades – which was great for them, but not so sweet for Travel Agents. We had to sell two to three times as much in travel just to keep commission levels at levels they had seen in years past.

I have to hand it to any company who’s made it through a year like 2009 regardless of who they are, or what they do. When anyone in our industry takes a hit like Orbitz has, the entire industry is reminded of how lucky we are to still be in business. In a way, it shows strength and resolve – even with the huge losses.

Think about YTB with all that it had to endure for the last 18 months – yet I’m still here with a booking engine that’s producing sales and revenue. Some said I nor the company would make it past 2009. At this point, every day I look at my booking engine, or see a new cruise booked in my back office, I think about those people and smile. Why? Because I no longer have to question if they could be right – I see the fruits of my dedication and determination with my own eyes. My experience once again overrides mere words to the contrary.

It wasn’t easy, nor was it pleasant to endure all the doom and gloom during 2009.

The outlook for the coming year looks much better than it did this time last year. Commissions are getting close to where they were prior to the all fire sales we saw over the last year. (That’s not to say there aren’t some great deals to be had.) Businesses and families are traveling once again. Maybe not at the levels they once were, but when I look at the amount of advanced bookings compared to this time last year, it’s dramatic. Most of what I saw last year were last minute deals that customers just couldn’t pass up.

It’s good to see that I wasn’t alone or that our situation in YTB was unique. Everyone struggled and everyone had “issues”.

I’m just thankful that it looks like all this is behind us (for the most part) and everyone appears to be far more optimistic and on the mend.

Including YTB.

Airlines optimistic as they move into 2010

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Digg me

You know me…always looking for the positive angle. It’s part of my DNA. (Or how I was brought up if you ever talk to my mother.) .

Regardless of who’s fault it is, I found a very positive article about the airline industry that I wanted to share in Travel Weekly. I did a short piece on Examiner.com just before the Thanksgiving holiday weekend that caught my eye. AirTran was predicting a 5% increase in air travel during the busy travel holiday weekend over last years numbers. Unfortunately, the ATA (Air Transport Association) wasn’t so sure and was predicting a 4 percent decline during the same period.

airline-routes-chartMuch to the delight of Continental, Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska and AirTran, they too saw a significant increase for the entire month of November now that they’ve looked over the data. As a result, the numbers have most in the industry looking at 2010 in a much different light.

Not all the airlines reported an increase for the month. (Namely Delta, American, United and US Airways) However, the entire industry did see a slight uptick of 0.2% across all the airlines for the same period. According to AirTran Senior Vice President and CFO Arne Haak “The worst is behind us” as the industry has been experiencing close to double digit decreases in traffic in 2009. Prior to this current quarter most everyone in the industry has been extremely cautious. The news coming out of New York at the Next Generation Equity Research investors conference was a welcome change. It prompted Delta’s CFO Hank Halter to quote “demand will remain strong” and more executives stating that they are “starting to see more promising traffic and bookings”.

As an additional sign that the tide is starting to turn United ordered 50 new aircraft last week due to some very attractive pricing. (We can’t forget Carnival’s order of two new Dream Class ships last week either.) Like deals clients have seen to fill seats, rooms, and cabins, suppliers are starting to pull the trigger on some attractive deals of their own. Materials and supplies for building both aircraft and ships right now are looking very attractive for those who are willing to go after them.

And that’s exactly what we’re going to need to get us out of this funk we’ve been in. Those who think Government is that answer with it’s “stimulus package” or “bailouts” simply don’t get it. It’s spending in the private sector that stimulates the economy. The transfer of cash from one to another for a product or service.

We didn’t get here overnight, and it’s going to take more than one good month or a few orders to right this ship. But news like this catches the attention of those who have been “thinking” – into actually “doing”. This recession won’t last forever, and the companies who are willing to step out and spend on expanding and building now will be the ones best poised to take advantage of the recovery when it hits it’s full stride.

Regardless of when it happens, it’s good to see news like this and people starting to look at the future in a more optimistic light.

I Miss Our Room Steward…

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Digg me

I lost count how many times I’ve said this…but I’m gonna say it again.

A cruise is the best vacation money could buy.

The Bauknight FamilyIt was nice to have family (including extended family) together for another cruise. Our daughter called it “The best birthday EVER!” and our son has caught the same bug we did some 12 years ago when Ronda and I took our first cruise.

I did hit the internet for a grand total of 25 minutes, but didn’t even open the laptop until almost the very end of the cruise to download a couple gigs worth of pictures that I took. (Some 400 shots all together on a Fuji S9000 camera I just love.) I uploaded about 60 of them on my Facebook page and will get around to putting more up on Webshots at some point. (Then again – I still have pictures from our last cruise I haven’t uploaded.)

The kids have really gotten the hang of cruise thing. Brittany thoroughly enjoyed dressing up for formal night. (So much so, that she had to get all dressed up for her birthday night.) Brian found the ice cream machines and the 24 hour pizzeria and hardly ate anything else the entire week. Camp Carnival was FABULOUS for both kids. When they ask if they can go, you just know it’s a hit. (Which impressed both Ronda and I.) They really had a great time and our hats are off to all the counselors who took great care of our kids.

Our daughters birthday was an exceptional day in Gran Cayman. The entire family got involved on the Cayman Pirate Adventure as the kids and I were recruited to swab the deck (I was given a tooth brush) and “Mommy Spank Bottom” was tied up and forced to promise to never spank the bottoms of our kids again. Afterward, everyone walked the plank and enjoyed the warm tropical water.

Later that evening we celebrated Brittany’s birthday with the family and wait staff of the Universe Dinning room. Brittany loves to be the center of attention any other time, and handled her birthday no differently. The entire ship was told it was her birthday and she ate up all the attention. (As she always does.)

It’s still amazes me how many first time cruisers I continue to run into. We talked with a number of first time cruisers on this trip who raved about the service, the food, and the size of this floating resort. Non of them had any idea what they were missing, and have all been transformed into cruise-a-holics like we are.

While it’s nice being back, I miss the romance and relaxation of the sea. I bit warmer down in the Caribbean as well. We’re already planning our next cruise and may turn it into a neighborhood event. With another Carnival Sail-A-Thon coming up next week, it would be a perfect time to get the neighbors together to discuss the option of going. (More on the Sail-A-Thon here later, and in this weekends newsletter.)

A trip like this one is part of my “why” I stick with YTB.

What’s Your Life Balance Barometer?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Digg me

When I first saw this story in Travel Weekly about Princess doing a survey on the most stressed out cities in the US I was intrigued. I mean – cruise lines have been helping people de-stress for decades. While I wouldn’t consider this survey Pulitzer material, it’s certainly an interesting read for those of us who want to sell more vacations. (If you want Pulitzer, I’ve been telling people for over a decade that a cruise is the best vacation money can buy.)

irate-cust-510The Princess survey was done in conjunction with Harris Interactive who specializes in custom market research. The press release also referenced Dr. Kathleen Hall, founder of The Stress Institute, who believes learning how to deal with stress is one of the most important things Americans can do to lead more balanced lives.

According to the survey the top-five things Americans feel will help them achieve better life balance include realizing financial success, improving physical fitness, getting organized and taking more breaks and vacations. Yet one in four Americans aren’t planning to take a vacation in the next year. (Siting “work-related” reasons for not taking one.) As a side note – these same Americans (particularly those living in Washington, D.C.) don’t think the President of the United States should be given any vacation days either.

Here’s the list of America’s Most Stressed Out Cities

1. Chicago
2. Houston
3. Boston
4. Los Angeles
5. San Diego
6. Denver
7. San Francisco
8. Detroit
9. Tampa (tie)
9. Portland, Ore. (tie)
10. Seattle
11. Washington, D.C. (tie)
11. Baltimore (tie)
12. Sacramento
13. Pittsburgh
14. Philadelphia
15. New York
16. Phoenix
17. Atlanta
18. St. Louis
19. Minneapolis
20. Cincinnati
21. Las Vegas
22. Dallas/Fort Worth
23. Miami

Not surprising that the least stressed city in the survey has a major cruise port. (Hummmm)

I found the Princess Press release and the findings are an interesting read. Some of them include that 72 percent of Americas say they do not have balance in their lives, but there is hope. Slightly more than half believe they can achieve life balance in the next five years. The survey also noted that the poor economy is a leading causes for life imbalance, followed by the need to lose weight.

My solution to achieve life balance? I’m going to tote the Princess line here – “escape completely” on a luxury cruise liner for a week. Have someone else do the cooking and cleaning, enjoy the romance of the sea, and there’s something about the turquoise water that just soothes the soul.

Brilliant Compensation

Friday, February 6th, 2009
6
Digg me

I’ve been a fan of Tim Sales for some time. I was introduced to Tim a number of years ago via a “Brilliant Compensation” CD that was given to me by my upline Director, Tim Dominey. When I listened to the CD, I already knew why Network Marketing worked, but Tim brought to light a number of key components that cemented why I believe in this industry. Tim has an entire selection of products to educate both you and your prospects in why Network Marketing works.

I highly recommend Tim’s products because he’s articulate, professional, and straight forward. In fact, Tim is so articulate and dead on, that the only thing critics can come up with to trash him is that he makes his money off selling his products. Other than pointing out the painfully obvious, they can’t come up with anything to discredit Mr. Sales, he’s that good. Tim provides a very valuable service to the Network Marketing industry and why he shouldn’t be paid for that service is beyond me, but it is what it is for those who can’t get past their own misconceptions about sales, service and promotion.

distribution1After my article on Wednesday and touching on why suppliers should follow the lead of vendors like Carnival Corporation, Globus, Trafalgar, Disney and others, I pulled out a copy of Tim’s CD to listen to it again after a couple of years of sitting there collecting dust. While I first learned how large corporations benefit from the Network Marketing industry from this CD, I wanted to see if there was anything I had forgotten or might have missed after putting the CD asside for so many years. While I hadn’t forgotten much, I reconnected with the appreciation I have for the way Tim presents the Network Marketing industry in a professional manor without all the hype. All too often we hear how you can make millions in Network Marketing while someone else does all the work. (I’ve actually been accused of doing this oddly enough!) I also like how Tim’s focus is product based, not recruiting based. (Being the “big time recruiter” is another label that I’ve seen some try to pin on me.)

The truth of the matter is, if this industry makes sense to you, than you owe it to yourself to find out more and find a product or service that you’re passionate about to actually get involved. I don’t know how many times I’ve stated this, but the reason I got involved with YTB was because I’d been telling people for over a decade that a cruise was the best vacation money could buy. I actually looked into becoming one of those “Traditional Agents” at one point but nobody I talked to wanted to give me a shot. I “didn’t have the experience” they said. I “needed an education” they said.

Blah Blah Blah Blah…

When YTB was put in front of me, I saw it as an opportunity to actually get paid when I talked about what I loved…cruising. So here I am some four years later while one of my clients referred one of their friends to me yesterday needing help for a last minute cruise for six, while I read articles and posts that I’m only concerned about lining my own pockets.

Nice!

For anyone interested in the truth and not spin, read the comments sections of my article (which some say I don’t allow) and the creative liberties taken to create my critics perception will become abundantly clear.

By the way…this new client for the cruise next week…they first called Royal Caribbean and found them to be “snooty”. Frustrated, they called a friend to get a recommendation of a “Travel Agent” to help them. Thus I got a call out of the blue and found something to suit their wants and needs. Amazing how that works, huh?

Anyway, back to why large corporations LOVE distribution channels like YTB and other Network Marketing companies to distribute their products and services. Network marketing aims at helping manufacturers and suppliers market their products to the end consumers via independent local distributors. By engaging local distributors to market the products of the company, the company is able to generate more income and save on distribution and advertising cost.

Most companies would spend thousands of dollars to promote their products through TV commercials, advertising, billboards and other forms of media. Think about the relationship between YTB and World Choice. (Travelocity) How many times do you see that Roaming Gnome on TV or in print adds? They spend MILLIONS in this type of advertising, and while I’m sure there are bean counters that calculate what the ROI is in these various mediums, they know what costs are involved when they partner with a company like YTB.

Zip, Zilch, Nadda. Money is only paid out when a sale is actually produced. It’s a win-win.

Promoting products and brands could cost the company a lot of money that a good portion of the cost that you pay for a certain product is actually added in to defray the advertising and promotion expenses. In some cases, as much as 20% of the cost of the product you buy goes to advertising and promotions. On the other hand, the distribution cost of the products would eat up to another 30% of the product cost. If you are wondering why a certain product that you buy in the supermarket could cost a lot of money, it is because of the advertising, promotion and distribution cost that is factored into the total product cost. Since the network marketing strategy does away the promotion and advertising cost by engaging local distributors to personally promote the products to the their friends, relatives and colleagues, the company will now be able to give the distributors big commissions. In most instances, the network marketing company will give the local distributors direct commissions of up to 30% of the sales generated by a local distributor.

With the new “Trip of a Lifetime Sweepstakes” YTB goes to a vendor or supplier directly and promotes their product or property with no advertising costs to drive traffic and sales via our own marketing channel, and in return YTB is able to not only able to generate a higher commission to me as an agent, but a better price to my clients.

Another win-win.

How anyone can argue this method is a mystery, but they do try don’t they? I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not about the method so much, but a fear of change and loss that drives most of the negativity associated with Network Marketing. That’s why I like Tim Sales so much. He’s able to clear up the myths and misconceptions about the industry in a concise, professional manor with no bull, no hype and no spin. Most have been trained just one way, and this IS a different approach.

Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean you have to trash it. It just means you don’t have enough information to make an informed, educated business decision about it.

Before I go…I almost forgot. I have a couple of errors and omissions to correct from Wednesday. First I mentioned that “No Moron Here” worked for Pleasant Holidays, he does not. Why he feels the need to be so secretive about himself and who he works for speaks volumes. Unlike myself who is very open about who I am, some are fearful of consequences. (And I’m the one who’s the fraud!) If he’s able to live with it, so am I.

Second, I mentioned that one of the few places to speak freely about the Travel Industry without the presence of John Frenaye was WAHM. Also found to be incorrect sadly enough. We can however look on the bright side, as his screen name is extremely telling, don’t ya think?

Nyuk nyuk nyuk!

TravelPro & Pro YTB Banned from Scam.com

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

Digg me

When you play with snakes, you’re bound to get bit. Lately, I’ve been trying to help some of the misinformed, disillusioned folks on Scam.com. Apparently, I’m not allowed to speak for those of us in YTB who are making a living and successful with the company. Those of us who want to reach out and help those who have been introduced to the business or expressing our experience with the company will get you BANNED!

What’s most amusing to me is that it was one of the forum members who called me to tell me that I was banned. I was never informed from the moderators or administrators. I have requested an explanation as to why Scam.com decided to ban me, but have yet to receive any type of explanation. (I doubt I ever will.) When you’re dealing with Anti-MLM Zealots who close their minds to anything that differs from their own views, they don’t need to give explanations.

Oh well, it is their site. They are certainly free to operate any way they choose.

Corporate PyramidFor those of you who don’t know what Scam.com is, here is my experience. It’s a place where people can go to promote all their troubles and slander any company of their choosing. A site like Scam.com promotes myths, misconceptions and ignorance out there about the industry. All MLM’s are Pyramid Schemes, all MLM’s are Scams and if you don’t agree with this mantra, you’re simply banned without any explanation or reason. It’s not limited to our industry, it’s simply a place that promotes all that’s wrong or negative in our world today. It never ceases to amaze me how so many people tend to lay blame on things outside of themselves. It’s always someone else’s fault for anything that goes wrong. And that’s why a board like Scam.com thrives. The vast majority of the people, who post there, are simply bitter, angry, negative people, and gosh daren’t they want to keep it that way! What’s even more amazing is that very few of them, if any, have ever really experienced, or remotely been involved with anything their complaining about.

I had been reading this board from time to time, and a few months ago decided to give some of these folks there “a clue” about how things really are with YTB and the Network Marketing industry in general. Understand YourTravelBiz.com is a Network Marketing Company; YTB Travel Network is a full service Travel Agency. These pour souls simply label all companies “Pyramid Schemes” or a “Scam”. They simply don’t know any better based on what the “heard about” or what they “read about”. With a board like this getting so much activity, and the YTB thread getting so much attention; I decided to throw my hat into the ring and step up to show some of the readers that an average guy, like me, CAN make a viable living with this company and industry. Based on my two years of experience with this company, it’s simply not the doom and gloom everyone wants to make it out to be.

It’s not that I was entirely unsuccessful in doing so. I did in fact help a lot of people. I wish I could access some of the posts and private messages on the board, but they can no longer be accessed or have simply been deleted. I do have a couple of private e-mails in which people have expressed how much they appreciated how I have helped them.

Hello Doug,

I wanted to thank you for your contribution to the scam.com thread on YTB. I am doing my due diligence on the company to see if it would be a good fit for me personally, and I ran across this thread via a search on Google.
A lot of trash was thrown up, but I was impressed on how you handled the opposition. You helped me check off a lot of the questions I have on my list of what I am evaluating on the company.

I wish you the best,

Steve

There was another post I read just last week, from a gentleman named Drew in Texas. He took the time to post his sincere gratitude on how I’ve been able to inspire him and help him in his own journey with YTB. He was having some problems, mostly from others just like the ones on Scam.com. After finding my posts however, he found the strength and wisdom to continue moving forward with new insights about what this company and industry really means. I wish I could share that with you as well, but the entire thread had been deleted. In the short time I was allowed to post on these boards, I did touch a number of lives in a positive way, and for that I am grateful.

You need to understand something when it comes to Anti-MLM Zealots. They selectively use evidence that supports their case and throw away (or ban) anything else that doesn’t. They work by categorizing, separating, hiding, judging and condemning, attacking and rejecting. When they’re in trouble like they were with me, they try to distract everyone from all the good news, all the company and personal success of folks like me. They blow the whole situation out of proportion. By making a lot of noise, they think everyone will miss what is really going on. I actually had some great fun playing with a few of the members on the board. The more they attacked, and rejected, the more evidence I brought to the table that dispelled their illusion. It wasn’t all that hard, most never even had any personal experience in YTB, let alone the industry.

That’s all it is, an illusion. They live in a world based in fear and lack, often living in the past, (which doesn’t exist anymore) bringing it into the present, and predicting the future, (which also doesn’t exist) to scare everyone into believing that there is something inherently wrong with the Network Marketing Industry and it should be banned from society. We are liars, cheats, who pray on the poor unsuspecting souls, the “bottom feeders” whose pockets we pick to line all the pockets of “The Man” up at the top. Because they feel this way, everyone else needs to feel the same way, and if you don’t, God help you.

They love linking to Wikipedia, an on-line encyclopedia in an attempt to educate us. Only using information that supports their view on the page, and negating information on the same page that supports Network Marketing. (That was fun!) They love to refer to decade old Pyramid Schemes that the Government has shut down. They also like to refer to some of their heroes who have gotten so much attention elsewhere on the internet offering “proof” that their views are valid. They can’t come up with anything original on their own so they refer to these references over and over. Lengthy articles like “What’s Wrong With Multilevel Marketing?” by Dean Van Druff, “False Profits” and “Pyramid Nation” by Dr. Robert FitzPatrick, “Behind The Smoke & Mirrors” by Ruth Carter, “Product Based Pyramid Schemes” and “Tall Taxing Tails” by Dr. Jon Taylor along with web sites like MLM Survivors. Leonard Clements spend some considerable time a few years ago looking at all these so called heroes and does a very effective job dispelling the myths and illusions of these poor misguided folks. I enjoyed reading his series of articles “Anti-MLM Zealots Me Thinks Dot Protests Too Much”. I found it ironic that I actually found this gem on Scam.com, doubly so, since he had much the same experience I did with Scam.com being ban from MLM Survivors.

By the way…if you’ve ever wanted to know the REAL story behind the term “Pyramid Scheme”, Tim Sales did an excellent article a few months back entitled “Is MLM Really a Pyramid Scheme?

So, my days on Scam.com are over. I guess all I can do at this point is ride off into the sunset. Hopefully never to be forgotten by some of the fine individuals who come there doing their due diligence on YTB and Network Marketing. There are a lot of smart people who view these threads, and many of them see these poor misguided souls for what they really are. If I ever do get a response from the moderators or administrators, I’ll let you know. (Don’t hold your breath!)

That being sad, it’s time to go get a shower and cleanse myself from all the filth I endured for the last few months. What to do after that? I can still find effective ways of helping thousands of people, and in return I’ll create even more wealth, abundance, and joy!
