Eco-Friendly Ireland? There’s An App For That!

When I ran into this marriage of eco-friendly travel and iPhone app – I fell in love. Both happen to be two of my favorite subjects in the whole world right now. I’ve always been a technology geek, and love how it’s used to increase productivity and speed. When it helps out the environment too – it’s simply a slam dunk.

I’ve collected an entire page of “green” applications on my iPhone over the years. (Probably installed at least two pages, but condensed it down to the applications I use most.)

Catherine Mack is responsible for creating a brand new application in iTunes called Ireland Green Travel. Catherine is a travel writer specializing in green, eco, responsible and ethical tourism. She also holds a Masters degree in Responsible Tourism Management. Her new application for the iPhone features the best green accommodations, activities and hiking adventures, along with eco-friendly places to stay in Ireland.

Green places to stay include lakeside lodges, yurt camps, island retreats, eco-castles, grand houses “with more than just grand green gestures”, yoga retreats, community-run hostels, switched-on hotels and activity centers throughout the island of Ireland, North and South of the border. The application also features how to get there without using a car.

Catherine wrote a book called Eco Escape: Ireland some years ago and wanted to update it. What she ended up with was not only an update on all the eco-friendly places and activities that are popping up all over the Ireland – but an update in technology with this cool new mobile app.

According to Catherine, she was a bit hesitant about creating an application instead of the tried and true guidebook. After launching the new application however, Catherine admits there are a myriad of benefits for both her and the end user. Her biggest surprise was how she could update the application with new tours and activities without having to re-write a new book or application. End users also have to capability to interact and connect through the application with Google Maps, YouTube videos, train timetables; links to walking trails, and eye catching photos.

The new iPhone app is moderately priced at $2.99 and can be found in the iTunes store. You can also search for the application directly on your iPhone under “Ireland Green Travel”.

ZamZuu Sales Extravaganza

Digg me

I have to hand it to the Founders of YTB and the Home Office staff.

Last month, I wrote about our company celebrating it’s 10 year anniversary. When the company was founded, it positioned itself in front of a massive market shift – Online Travel. While some claimed it couldn’t be done via a direct sales model, YTB Travel Network solidified itself as one of the Top 50 Host Agencies in the United States that last four years running.

If you truly study Direct Sales like I do, and have an opportunity to work for an impact company like YTB you understand why this model works. Word of mouth has always been one of the best, most respected forms of advertising there is. If you want to equate it to something outside of Network Marketing – just take a look at Google, Facebook and Twitter. All three are top destinations on the Internet without a lick of traditional advertising to show for any of them. They’re all household names and multi-billion dollar companies today.

Accomplish 100% by word of mouth.

Network Marketing uses the exact same principle. During last year’s Convention, the company announced its “Free Revolution”. Giving away both travel and e-commerce sites to anyone who wants them. Without a lick of advertising, simple word of mouth, the company has attracted one hundred thousand new “Free Agent” recruits who now have their own booking engine and e-commerce web site in only six months’ time.

While YTB Travel Network and Your Travel Biz appeared to have massive growth when it went after the travel industry – one hundred thousand in six months’ time makes that look like a snail’s pace.

So what’s with this massive growth?

There’s a couple of reasons in my opinion.

Probably the biggest factor is seasoning. When we went after (and succeed) in the travel industry – there were those that frankly didn’t like it. (Still don’t like it quite honestly.) And when people don’t like something, they complain. (Whine, whimper, stomp, kick, and cuss in our case.) Many of the stunts that were pulled were frantically thrown out there to either slow the company’s growth or completely shut the company down are well documented on this site.

Yes, it may have been a nuisance, and did slow the company down for a while. Like any good company with a solid business model however, all the attention made the company stronger. We’re more creative, more steadfast, and more diversified than ever before.

That’s a powerful combination. If you couldn’t beat us then, you certainly don’t have a prayer now.

So what’s next for the company? You may have heard rumblings of something called a Z-Kit. The Z-Kit is the type of product everyone can see, feel, and touch – no matter who you are.

I’ve never really understood how companies like Nexion, Coral Sands, TravelQuest and the like can all charge startup and monthly fees for their “product” (AKA: Agency) while at the same time there are those that simply won’t put YTB Travel Network into that same category. It’s not like I can tell the IRS that the commissions reported on my 1099 aren’t real or not from the same suppliers they have. (Although I thought about it this week when my 1099 for travel sales came in.)

I know that the excuse will be what’s it’s always been – “it’s a recruiting game”. Unfortunately, nobody’s ever paid for the opportunity to recruit in this company. Payment has always been for the same product these other agencies charge for. A booking engine and vehicle to assist them in selling travel products and services. Sure, I’ve made money selling booking engines. If I sell it, I should get paid. Nexion, Coral Sands and TravelQuest all get paid – so why I shouldn’t is an argument that has been lost for a long time from the holes I’ve found in that bucket of hog wash.

So the company has come up with a “product” everyone can see and touch called the Z-Kit.

This Z-Kit can be used as an incredible foundation. People will be doing more than just trying these products out. They’ll be creating a personal product testimonial from an assortment of products they really like. Just like travel, you become a product of the product – simple right? I did it with cruises years ago and trust me – when you think a cruise is the best vacation money can buy, it’s easy to talk about and easier to sell.

Introducing potential Free Agents about the business becomes even easier. Drawing on their own experience with the products not only gives them confidence, but it also allows Free Agents to get excited just as the Broker is about their new free business.

Plus, Brokers receive rebates to distribute as they like. These make the perfect “Grand Opening” gift to new Free Agents, or they could even use them as prizes when hosting a home party for their business. Not only will this encourage Free Agents to purchase Featured Store products, but it will also help them to see the value of the great new business they received.

To kick things off, the company is hosting a ZamZuu Sales Extravaganza tonight to lay it all out for anyone interested. The webinar will provide all the updates and first-hand information you could ask for. Founders Coach and Scott Tomer will be live on ZamZuuTV.biz from 9 p.m. until midnight Central to talk about this new tool and how to use it.

And why should you listen to guys like Coach and Scott. Well, they’re successful for one. Before YTB, they spent decades with a company now known as Primerica. They also managed to guide this company (YTB International, Inc.) through some very turbulent economic times and come out more resolved and more diversified than ever before.

Oh, and they did what nobody prior to them did before. They successfully broke into the Travel Industry when no other model of this type was able to do it before. These are two very smart, very savvy, and very successful guys.

The choice is yours – and it doesn’t have to be about travel. It could be one of hundreds of products and services. All you have to do is take a look and if you find something that interests you, go for it.

Hope to see you tonight on ZamZuuTV.biz.

Shot Out Of A Cannon…

Digg me

I mentioned Tuesday that YTB always has a number of blockbuster announcements during Coach’s Birthday Bash. Word has started to get out about some of the upcoming releases and the company isn’t wasting any time in getting out the good word.

Not only is the company gearing up for its annual Birthday Bash next week on January 11th – but a date has been set for another ZamFest party the last half of January – from the 17th to the 31st. (Also found on www.ZamZuuTV.com.) The theme for this party is geared around better health. With the New Year, we’re all thinking about New Year’s Resolutions. For many, that resolution centers on better health. To kick off the New Year, ZamFest is throwing resolutions out the window and focusing on solutions. We don’t just talk about improving our health; we’re actually doing it.

The company will close out the month with Carnival for a Winter Warm Up Sail-A-Thon January, 27 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm Central with some great deals to Europe and the Caribbean in 2011 and beyond. More information can be found here, or on BandBVacations.com during the week of the event.

Speaking of Carnival – sales are up. We know that because YTB Travel Network’s commission percentage went back up to previous levels. (You can find the percentages in your Travel Portal.) All the doom and gloom last year from the peanut gallery (minus the “pea”) was nothing more than hype. They never can figure out which way is up or even accurate. We however, told you sales were on the rebound, and based on this commission percentage increase – we were right on mark. Regardless of right or wrong, it never would have happened if our Agents didn’t take responsibility on their own and give a little more love to a great cruise line that has taken very good care of us over the years.

We didn’t whine about it – we actually did something about it to rectify the situation so that everybody wins. That’s the YTB way.

And lastly, you’ll notice a change in our air, car and hotel products.

Back when we first started with YTB, I remember a bidding war between Priceline and Travelocity for the privilege to host these products on our sites. Priceline was a good vendor for us then, but Travelocity wanted it more. A bidding war broke out between the two and what ripped Priceline off our sites and slid Travelocity in was a better deal for the Agents.

After a four year relationship with Travelocity, Orbitz has now taken over the huge influx of air, car and hotel bookings made through YTB Travel Network.

Orbitz Worldwide has replaced Travelocity Partner Network as the provider of air, car and hotel products and is now the exclusive provider for these commodity products on the YTB Travel Network booking engine. YTB Travel Network has also negotiated a contract with Orbitz Worldwide that, effective February 1, 2011, will include a commission on airline bookings while continuing the elimination of a service fee. Please see the updated commission rates in the Commission section of the My Account tab in the Travel Portal.

Commissions earned on air, car and hotel products will now be paid based on the date of consumption, not the booking date. The date of consumption is defined as the date of completed travel. Nothing new there – as it’s in line with how the rest of the industry pays.

Customer Profiles was a huge factor for years for the field and it looks like Orbitz came through for us here as well. The initial launch of the Orbitz Worldwide Customer Profile is coming in February 2011. The new profile feature will provide the ability to use a basic customer profile that will store the customer name and credit card. Later this year this feature will be greatly enhanced. The new functionality will allow:

  • Storage and use of TSA-relevant information (including birth date) for booking
  • Storage and use in booking of multiple credit cards
  • Storage and use in booking of loyalty program information for Air, Hotel and Car

Other new features supplied by Orbitz are marketing and promotion which will also be rolled out during the year.

The Orbitz deal utilizes the NeatAgent application tailored specifically for traditional bricks and mortar travel agencies. According to their website “These traditional agencies provide comprehensive travel services for their clients in person or over the telephone and represent more than 60% of today’s travel distribution”.

In other words – when you read the hype from traditionalists – just know they use it too. Just tell them “Thanks for sharing” and get back to work. (An idea they may want to consider to rectify their own dismal existence.)

Speaking of traditionalists – they never dreamed YTB Travel Network would even see 2011. We were supposed to be long gone according to them. (Wishful thinking at this point.) YTB Travel Network is alive and well and as long as they let us – we’ll continue play the role of thorn in side. (It’s their choice after all – not ours.)

The way I see it – looks like YTB Travel Network is packing more powder to shoot more cannon balls across their bow to let them know we have absolutely no plans of going away.

Consumers Confidence Increases

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Digg me

I was reading a couple of the travel publications yesterday afternoon, and found an interesting read that I had to share from Travel Agent Central.

I found the original Press Release from Discover Financial Services and thought I’d place a copy of the release here – it’s a very optimistic and promising read.

Enjoy!

Discover® U.S. Spending MonitorSM Reaches 3-Year High, Jumping 4.3 Points in November

Monitor’s Rise Fueled by Brighter Economic and Financial Outlook among Consumers; Spending Intentions Significantly Different from a Year Ago

RIVERWOODS, Ill., Dec 08, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Consumer confidence reached its highest point in three years and saw its biggest month-to-month increase since April as more Americans believe U.S. economic conditions are improving and their personal finances are getting better, according to the Discover U.S. Spending Monitor.

The Monitor, a poll of 8,200 consumers tracking confidence and spending intentions on a daily basis, rose 4.3 points in November to 91.8. Thirty-one percent of consumers feel economic conditions are improving, a 4-point increase from October. Forty-five percent of consumers feel economic conditions are getting worse, a 4-point decrease from October.

Consumers are feeling better about their personal finances, as well. Twenty-three percent, the most since February 2008, feel their finances are getting better, up 2 points from October and 4 points from 2009. For the second month in a row, fewer consumers report their finances are worsening; 45 percent say their finances are getting worse, down 2 points from the previous month and 4 points from last year.

Improved confidence among consumers is reflected in increased holiday spending intentions compared to this time last year, a hopeful sign for retailers looking to rebound from dismal holiday sales over the last two years.

9-Point Change in Holiday Spending Intentions Year-Over-Year

In 2009, two-thirds of consumers reduced their holiday spending budget, and half headed into the holidays looking to cut their discretionary spending. This year, the Monitor’s numbers tell a different story.

The number of consumers who say they expect to spend less this holiday season has fallen 9 points from 2009. Last November, 65 percent of consumers said they were going to spend less on holiday gifts than they did the year before; only 56 percent feel that way this year. Of the nine percent who shifted, the majority said they would spend about the same, but one in four said they would be spending more.

Consumer Spending Intentions: Slightly More Discretionary Spending, Less Cutting Back

The Monitor reported a 12-point rise to 35 percent in the number of consumers intending to spend more next month. Heading into the holiday shopping season, the rise was not unexpected, as the Monitor reported similar increases during this time over the last three years. Nineteen percent plan to spend less next month, down 2 points from October and 1-point from a year ago.

But consumers’ discretionary spending intentions are more upbeat compared to last year. In 2009, half of consumers went into December looking to cut discretionary spending. This year, many of them plan to either spend the same or more on discretionary purchases in the following areas:

  • Going out to dinner or the movies: 51 percent plan to spend the same or more next month, a 5-point increase from 2009. 47 percent plan to spend less next month, down 3 points from a year ago.
  • Home improvements: 47 percent plan to spend the same or more, up 4 points from last year. 48 percent plan to spend less, down 4 points.
  • Vacation or gym membership: 51 percent plan to spend the same or more, up 5 points from 2009. 46 percent plan to spend less, down 4 points.

“Consumer confidence in the economy and their personal finances is significantly better than a year ago,” said Julie Loeger, senior vice president of brand and product management for Discover. “Their improved economic and financial outlook has resulted in far fewer consumers planning to cut their discretionary spending this year compared to 2009, encouraging news for retailers this holiday shopping season.”

49% Have Money Left Over After Paying Monthly Bills

Better views from consumers about their personal finances may have to do with the fact that for the first time in four months, more consumers have money left over in their budgets after paying monthly bills. Forty-nine percent said they had money left over, tying a Monitor high for 2010. However, November marked the 20th consecutive month this number has been below 50 percent.

Eighty percent of those who do have money left over after paying monthly bills planned on having the same or more money left over than the previous month, the fourth straight month this number has equaled or topped 80 percent.

For the first time in five months, the Monitor reported an increase in the number of consumers expecting an income shortfall. The number reached 40 percent in November, rising 3 points from the previous month. In all likelihood, this is due to tighter budgets during the holiday shopping season. A similar rise was reported heading into the holiday shopping season last year.

Cyber Monday Sales Jump 20% Over 2009

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Digg me

Remember the fuss a couple years ago when online travel was gaining momentum over traditional brick and mortar? Today, Expedia books more travel than any other agency – traditional or otherwise. As well, four of the top ten travel agencies are online booking engines, booking more the $51 BILLION in travel in 2009 combined.

Today we see retail gaining momentum within the online arena.

Last week, data from Coremetrics, an IBM Company was released to the public – announcing that online sales in the United States were up 19.4% compared to last year’s Cyber Monday event. Web sales were also estimated to be 31.1% higher than Black Friday, three days earlier, making this past Cyber Monday the biggest online shopping day of the year.

John Squire, of Coremetrics stated that Internet shopping last Monday was highlighted by major retailers offering free shipping and other aggressive discounts to lure consumers.

“Consumers this year appear much more willing to open their wallets and are turning to online stores for the convenience of shopping wherever and whenever they like,” he said. “Retailers have done an exceptional job across the board of appealing to consumers with highly personalized promotions and a slew of free shipping promotions”.

The average order value (AOV) online was also up from $180.03 to $194.89 for an increase of 8.3 percent. (The largest jump by the way was 2009 with the average order jumping from $130 in 2008 to $180 in 2009.) Consumers flocked online a week ago, with shopping momentum not only being maintained throughout the day, but had stronger momentum all day compared to Cyber Monday just one year earlier.

Social Media is also making an impact according to the report:

The growing trend of consumers using their networks on social sites for information about deals and inventory levels continued on Cyber Monday. While the percentage of visitors arriving from social network sites is fairly small relative to all online visitors — nearly 1 percent — it is gaining momentum, with Facebook dominating the space.

ZamFest ring a bell for anyone? If you were on line at all last weekend, it seemed as if everyone was talking about the deals found online. Facebook, Twitter, even e-mail campaigns that flooded our in-box from merchants ready and willing to service eager shoppers.

During the Holiday’s in 2009, online spending jumped from just 6% to 12% and did not decrease afterward. If this trend continues into 2011 like it did in 2010, look for online sales to maintain between 15% and 20% of all retail spending.

And here we are…ahead of the paradigm shift yet again. I’ve got to hand it to the Founders of our Company. True visionaries who always appear to be ahead of the curve before major shifts and trends start popping up. They did it with A.L. Williams – then YTB Travel – and now it looks like ZamZuu is destined to hit the same high marks.

Travel has always been my first love – and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity YTB gave me when everyone else in the travel industry didn’t give me the time of day. Now I’m involved in a new stream of revenue that increases the opportunity and income just by hanging around winners. I’ve been partnered with Affiliate Programs for years, referring products for years. (Long before ZamZuu.) This program not only expands the merchants, but manages hundreds of stores under a single umbrella.

You’ve got to love it – especially when you understand and can appreciate the kind of Founders that run this company. Smart, insightful, and extremely motivational.

Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Why would you? They give new meaning to the words “Happy Holiday’s”.

Can We Stop With The Charade?

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Digg me

Three years ago, YTB’s most famous cynic came bursting onto this blog with the mission to tell me – you, and anyone else who could stomach it – that MLM and Travel was a bad mix. When John Frenaye landed here, it took a nanosecond to figure out how this guy ticked. It’s a very standard and predictable M.O. that works by categorizing, separating, hiding, judging, condemning, attacking and rejecting.

Today, the name John Frenaye is synonymous with Anti-YTB after three years of rants and obsessive – compulsive behavior. Daily life consists of prowling the Internet for any tid-bit or morsel of food that can be reworked or rearranged and thrown back out in an attempt to justify his radical cause. His obsession has also compelled him to join every Facebook Fan page YTB or ZamZuu has – opting in under various aliases on several YTB newsletters (including ours), and even joining YTB a few years ago as a free “Rep” just to gain access to company information and communication to rework and refine with his own twist in an effort to satisfy his immense appetite over YTB.

Proper etiquette, rules or boundaries have little place for someone who needs to feed a powerful addiction. Nor is there any room for reasoning or solution based alternatives. All “pro” statements that don’t conform to the “Frenaye Creed” are quickly met with a direct rebuttal or even better – an abrupt and public reprimand. Many have described his uncompromising behavior cult like.

John is personally responsible for spreading his “creed” to every available board, forum, and blog, promoting his radical thinking and perceptions. Always watching – always monitoring the vast amount of communication and sites about YTB, just as soon as there’s a comment to support YTB – you can bet that John will be there to distract everyone from the topic at hand to trash the model, company, Founders and members.

After years of incessant rants – about the only option anyone has these days is the “ignore feature” found on these forms and boards to protect your computer (or your mind) from being infected. I have very little knowledge or care about what he’s writing these days, but there’s only one person I can think of that fits this description:

“Obviously, from your blog you will spin anything to the negative against this company. Some of it may be for good reason…some of it seems like an old crazy girlfriend I dated in high school.”

What’s also obvious is that John’s reputation precedes him.

While I’m years removed from the confines of alcoholism, I remember what it’s like to be consumed by addiction. How the compulsion controls every aspect of your life. True, to outsiders who see the daily rants, it looks to be bizarre and dysfunctional. For John however, life feels quite normal – even “right” because it’s so routine.

His own blog throughout the years, has been the home port to spew all that’s wrong with YTB. He’s prided himself on an open blog forum that allows all views and positions. A few months back however, his open blog forum policy was drastically changed and comments have since been shut down – completely.

The only views expressed or allowed are those of the owner now. Mind you, it’s no big loss. In fact – I applaud the disposal of daily rants and trash talking designed to keep emotions, rumors and fear at a frenzy level.

However, when I heard about the excuse in this thread (sorry, no direct link because Ainsworth is also on “ignore”) – I couldn’t help but think how John has deceived his own flock. Has John told his followers that someone was attacking his kids on Facebook?

Mind you, I would agree that would certainly be enough to scare any parent. (This one included.) If that were truly the case, I’d even feel applauded over John’s situation. It’s just not right – and if I find documented proof this is the case – beware.

Truth is however, from what I know about the comments made on his blog – they weren’t about his children at all – but about John and his personal failures as a young adult and travel professional. After all the years of poking and prying into everyone else’s lives and publicly posting them on his blog, someone has finally had enough and exposed the real John Frenaye and his less the perfect behavior and past on this site.

Several members of YTB have known about John’s troubles for some time, including me – but nobody has stooped to this level before. I’ve been asked on several occasions to post these findings in the hope it would turn the tables against John. Some have even speculated that it would shut him up.

About all it would do for sure would provoke more anger and resentment. John’s clearly not able to look at himself or his views as anything less than admirable and above reproach. With John’s bizarre behavior and ridiculous spin over the years, I’ve really never seen the need to add this information into the mix. In my opinion, the documentation provided here related to YTB would conclude this guy isn’t playing a full deck.

Some may consider this new blog unfair or underhanded.

If that’s the case, would it be underhanded for John to purchase “thefactsaboutytb.NET” to link to his blog? Would it be considered unfair that John also created a “Zam (space) Zuu” fan page to mock and poke fun at the name, our members and our Founders? Would it be considered a personal attack that John posted a link to a news story similar to the one about him surrounding one of our Directors? How ’bout posting personal bankruptcy findings?

John’s been guilty of all these offensive and abusive actions over the years. Frankly, I’m somewhat surprised it took this long for it to show up in cyberspace. When you play with this kind of fire, you’re bound to get burned sooner or later.

With that said – I have no idea if John’s going to wise up or straighten up. It’s not my place – and I’m completely powerless in helping him at this point. The only person that can help John is John – that much I do know.

My hope however, is this information will help you let go and move on like I have. John’s perception of YTB is similar to telling me the sky is purple. Rant all you want about it – it’s not going to change the color from blue to purple simply because you yell louder than I do – or make believe you know any more than I do.

That charade ended the second he barged in here and he opened up his mouth.
