If You Don’t Like The Heat…

You best stay out of the kitchen.

Being one of the more visible YTB blogs on the internet, I have my share of readership. Most readers are supporters and enjoy my insight and information about our company.

I also have my share of detractors. Some I would safely say detest my existence for one reason or another. If you’re in the public eye, you can’t be everything to everybody and there will always be those who don’t agree with you. What makes my sort of activity and exposure dangerous is when emotions enter into the mix.

Emotions have too many variables. You can’t expect emotions to remain constant over time or from one person to another. Each individual perceives and reacts to each situation differently. Logic and facts however always have a base or a core that remain constant. One of the things we’re finding through our journey together with YTB is that the facts of our business model are able to withstand the misconception, half-truths, and lies that we see from those who use perceptions and opinions as their core defense.

As expected, John Frenaye took exception to my article on Friday and boldly laid claim that I’m the one who “spins”. He added that his blog was more “legitimate” and his was the only viable option where people had to ability to “judge for themselves”.

He’s also a tad upset at what he’s deemed a “personal attack” and eventually, “my lies” will catch up with me.

My – my – my. How easy it is to dish it out.

It’s interesting to me how quickly this group pulls the “personal attack” card when challenged. I’m not sure if they think they’re too pure, or we’re to take pity and look the other way when their blatant misrepresentations about our people, our Founders and our company are created by their hands. I hate to break it to this group – but they leave some enormous “stinkers” out there on the web. Their activities have left some laughing, and others appalled. We DO know right from wrong, ethical from unethical, what is morally right and what’s morally bankrupt.

To illustrate how bold and brazen John has become over the years, we’ll reference one of the most legitimate and honorable sources I know – our court system. What was forwarded to me last week clearly illustrates why our Home Office made the decision to turn down his requested interviews and why others have come to the conclusion that John can’t be trusted to “report” anything concerning YTB in an unbiased or accurate manor.

Case in point: This was written by John last week on his blog:

Of course, back in August of 2009, we reported on the story where Coach had a ramshackle home and was able to convince a church to make the repairs in return for a lease. But Coach reneged on the lease and got his home fixed for free.

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t call his post entitled “Once Upon a Time” an actual “report” but ironically – a “Fairy Tale”. If you strip away John’s “report” and look at the court documents which are linked in the word “TRUTH” it reveals John’s elaborate web of deception – not Coach’s.

Yes – John’s the one deceiving the flock – pouring Kool-Aid if you will. The “truth” shows that Coach and Chris “donated” the parcel in question to the church for a Minister and his family use as a parsonage. More troublesome; the word “lease” never even appears in the actual court documents, although conveniently inserted by John in his – “report”.

True, the home needed electrical upgrades to meet code, and a gas furnace needed to be converted to propane. There was never any lease however, and Coach and Chris never received a penny for their generous donation to the Church and its family. Consequently, the court concluded:

“the parcel here in issue and the house thereon qualified for exemption during all of the 1998-assessment year either because it was in the process of adaptation for exempt use or because it was actually used by the Church as a parsonage for Rev. Casey.”

I know I’m going out on a limb, but you be the judge here. Which do you find more “legitimate”? John’s “Once Upon A Time” fairy tale – or – documentation from “The State of Illinois“?

What’s so astounding to me, is the man doesn’t appear to understand how anyone could possibly question his “reporting” as wrong or even inappropriate. To question anything he says or does is challenged with a very coy rebuttal and continued claims that HE is the most fair and unbiased source concerning YTB in the land. According to John, he’s proven how Coach has a long history of deception and he’s proud that his flock agrees that Coach should be thrown in jail for doing what he did to this church.

And yes, that type of arrogance is frustrating – even for me.

We can’t forget another court ruling regarding YTB’s business model and claims of an elaborate pyramid scheme that wasn’t just dismissed but tossed out as “redundant, immaterial, impertinent, or scandalous matter“. Again we find John and others on the wrong end of an argument calling the absurd complaint “powerful”.

Here’s how the Honorable Judge Murphy described the complaint:

“The First Amended Consolidated Complaint, filed July 15, 2009, is an ungainly monster of 39 pages containing 133 paragraphs (many of which have subparagraphs) that likely does not pass muster under the familiar federal “notice pleading” standard.”

True to form, John “disagrees” with the court’s ruling, and makes no apologies for his position or opinions. John falls right in line with the type of hideous and outrageous accusations Counsel tried to pull in its second go around, after the first complaint was dismissed. Their answer to the problem – a bolder, more brazen attack.

So which do you find more legitimate? John’s statement, or Judge Murphy?

From John’s point of view, it’s YTB that is “crafty” and “sly”. The only reason why YTB is still around is due to changing our model or living on the very edge of the law. Regardless how much change or how close we “appear” to be, it’s still the right side of the law. YTB’s model has never required “payment for the opportunity to recruit others” from day one. You may not agree with that – you may not understand that – and you may never accept that. But because yours is only “opinion” and not “fact” – you do have to continue to deal with YTB.

Finally, John recently found out that the law is the law, and everyone (including him) must abide regardless of opinions or perceptions. The creation of a fake Zam Zuu fan page to mock and poke fun at our company violated ZamZuu’s trademark causing a confusing similarity. His defense – a space between “Zam” and “Zuu”. (And no, I’m not kidding.)

John, you don’t just stink – you absolutely reek of lies, deceit and a perception that the laws of this land simply don’t apply to you. It’s a double standard that I will not turn away from and I will not make any apologies for in calling you out. We all make mistakes (even me) but there comes a time when you have to stop blaming others or being a victim and take personal responsibility for your own actions.

You are in the public eye and there will be those who will disagree and oppose you. There will also be those who will hold you accountable for your actions. If you don’t like it, either toughen up or stop what you’re doing and go back into hiding.

As it stands right now – you have proven to me, our company, and several outsiders who have no beef one way or another with YTB that you should not be trusted due to your attitude and your actions documented above.

For every action, there is a reaction. So if you don’t like my reaction, stop acting the way you are!

MLM has it right…

I received my ASTA SmartBrief this week and was floored at one of the columns highlighted in this weeks mailing.

Before I move forward, I need to put out some sort of warning here that readers should not be drinking any type of liquid at this point in time. (All the sugar in your Kool-aid will ruin the monitor and cause the keyboard to stick.) When you find out who the author is, you’ll be just as surprised as I was. (As others have asked if this is the same now famous critic of YTB we’ve all come to know – but not actually love.)

Truth is, if there’s anything going on about YTB, you’ve got to know at this point in time that John Frenaye isn’t far behind. He’s pretty famous in our company for trolling the internet on anything YTB. It makes no difference if it’s one of his peers in the industry, a District Judge, an industry Power List, or an articulate member of YTB – John has an uncanny way of coming up with a “Yeah-But” or a “Look over here” piece to take the focus off the main subject and point you down a road that conforms to his own perceptions and beliefs.

Although this article is riddled with some pretty absurd perceptions of how MLM takes things to the extreme, you can judge from you own actions and experience if it has any value. Personally, I’ve never lost a friendship over YTB and nobodies ever vowed to never speak to me again. Furthermore, I’ve never been approached by anyone about any opportunity while standing in line at that grocery store.

We can simply kick those perceptions to the curb for the time being.

I do however, have to give John some credit for pointing out some very basic and solid business skills that MLM does in fact excel at. Based on my own experience with YTB, my business looks very much like his “traditional business” in every aspect. Based on those of you I personally know in this company, I think you’ll agree that yours does too.

All the snide and exaggerated comments and perceptions aside – there is something for the new recruit here to learn about why MLM works.

Referrals are as simple as John says they are. Do you know anyone who might be interested in selling travel, or picking up some extra income on a part time basis? The beauty of MLM is that you work when you have time. It’s not like a regular part time job that you have set hours, and quotas that you need to meet. Which can also be a problem for some – because it’s far to easy to think you don’t have time. The vast majority of our company work YTB on a part time basis with regular jobs and families to tend to.

Think about it…doesn’t asking for referrals sound much more attractive than hounding someone in line at the grocery store? (Who’s really tried that anyway?)

When it comes to followup, the company has a very cool system in place called the YTB System. I’ve used something similar to this my entire carrier with YTB. Not only does it capture qualified leads for you, but also notifies you when a prospect has looked at the program. Notification are also sent when they’ve returned and what they’re looking at while on the site. Using a system like this allows you to sort, not chase. For those who work YTB part time, this puppy is a real time saver. You’ll find yourself working with and talking to qualified prospects who are truly interested in what you have.

It’s all about working smarter not harder. However, the entire system is wasted if you don’t follow-up. It doesn’t have to be nearly the nine times John talks about. (I personally only spend half that much time before moving on.) But the money truly is in the follow-up.

Lastly, I’ve never seen a company with more products, or more streams of income than YTB. All I bought 5 years ago was a booking engine to sell travel. I was also given the opportunity (meaning it was a free opportunity) to sell booking engines as an added stream of income. Today, I’ve got something for hunters, golfers, newlyweds, and with the addition of shopYTB, just about any other product under the sun. If it’s available online, I probably have it. Heck, I’ve even got beef jerky if that’s what you’re into. (Or in John’s case – girdles!)

Yes, I know there some ribbing going on about that sort of thing. Honestly, neither the jerky or the girdles get me all that excited. But I’m certainly not going to knock the women of YTB for going nuts about girdles. (I know better – and if John was still married, he probably would too.)

These skills, principles, and the model really DO work. It’s why Avon is still around after more than 120 years. It’s the same reason Earl Tupper pulled Tupperware off store shelves in 1951 and has been sold via the MLM and the Direct Sales model for almost 60 years. After a decade of selling Nutrilite Products via MLM, two guys founded the American Way Association in 1959, which we know today as Amway. (Amway now owns Nutrilite Products Corporation.) In 1963 Mary Kay Ash started with 9 “beauty consultants” which today has expanded to 32 countries. In 1977 a good ol’ southern boy for Georgia founded A.L. Williams and just two years later, J. Lloyd Tomer joined the group just before the company outsold the entire insurance industry for 7 straight years in a row during the mid to late 1980’s.

And today you have a little company based in Wood River, Illinois who has been able to sell $424 million in travel in it’s 8th year in business.

There are hundreds of companies who sell via this model because MLM does have it right. (Take a look at the DSA list for more than 200 of them.)

True, it’s sad that John and others can’t seem to get out of their own way at times when it comes to some of the ridiculous and outlandish beliefs. Just remember, don’t take it personally. (Unless you’re the one person who pestered him in the grocery line. ;-P)

Truth is, MLM is more like their traditional business than they’ll ever know.

The only difference is some get that, and some don’t.

The Lies Keep Growing…

I had originally scheduled a post on the new struggles of Royal Caribbean today, but one of the lesser known critics commented that I should write about them again. I decided that not only would it be a good idea, but a lot of fun to point out how they’ve completely botched another attempt to point the finger at YTB, but ended up pointing three back at themselves.

pinnochio.noseIt never ceases to amaze me how low some people will stoop in an attempt to slander our fine company and our people. We’ve written at length about the lies, the misinformation, the false speculation, and how they love to distort and deceive in an attempt to tell the general public what’s wrong with YTB. Why they are so afraid of our company, I’ll never know. But even with all the evidence that proves them wrong, they continue to come back for more punishment.

As someone who has been calling a spade a spade for two years now, I make no apologies, nor do I feel the need to excuse how the lies, myths and false information goes against every fiber of my being. What I find most interesting is that instead of answering direct questions or accusations, I’m called names, they poke at my physical appearance, or try to tell me that I’m overreacting and being defensive. Reality is; that type of behavior is designed to get me off the subject at hand and put the focus on me instead of the real issue.

If you don’t like the heat, you should stay out of the kitchen. The hotter it gets, the more I know how much I irritate and frustrate our critics. That’s worth every slanderous comment, false accusation, and punch below the belt, which in turn reflects more on them than it ever will me. While they would love to have me join in the fun, they appear to be doing just fine without my participation. Besides, I would never want to distract them with actual documentation and facts that would highlight how clueless they are on their own turf. 

You may remember today’s subject from a battle won here just last year. While it frustrates our critics that Candi May has remained deaf and mute to any of the critics claims and false accusations, ignoring the jealous crowd of critics has enabled her to continue to build her business and remain quite happy with YTB. Like me, her self respect and self worth isn’t tied to a bunch of overzealous critics who can’t seem to get a life. Those who were at this years Convention probably remember Candi May and her “Travel Like a Rock Star” presentation. She has that same speech on her new blog and when the critics found it, they needed to mix things up, and I got to tell you…they botched it up.

If you either listened to her speak or take the time to read her post, Candi is abundantly clear about her experience in the traditional arena. She’s been travel agent for 24 years and gave examples of her experience as a traditional agent. For the traditionalist who want to keep these perks private however, they took issue with her stance and decided to attack her ethics, intelligence, and character to make it sound like she was deceiving everyone. (Much like they attempt to do with anyone else associated with YTB.

In her post, she states,

“I’ve been in the travel business for over 24 years now and for the 21 years before I was in YTB I was a traditional travel agent and eventually owned three travel agencies in Downtown Louisville. But, 24 years ago I was young, broke and inexperienced in the travel business. We took our first “agent rate” trip to a place called the Don Cesar in beautiful St. Petersburg Beach Florida.”

Sounds pretty clear to me…how ’bout you? Sorry to say, not everyone got that message. According to No Travel MLM’s Candi is called out for deceiving the general public. John writes:

This does sound wonderful, but there appears to be some serious sleight of hand going on here. Is anyone surprised? Well, John Travolta turned 50 in February 2004. And according to another post on Candy May’s blog:

I joined forces with YTB in June of 2006 and that is how this journey began.

John believes he has one of his infamous “gotchas” here with proof that one of our leaders is lying. He’s extracted one line from another post that is totally unrelated to her traditional agent journey and used it in an attempt to throw it back in the face of YTB. But take a look and read her first post in it’s entirety. You’ll find the following statement which can be found smack in the middle of her first blog post when she states:

“I started in the travel business a little over 24 years ago as a traditional travel agent.”

A statement that our critics hope you don’t find in the first post so they can pound their chest and slander someone so they can feel better about themselves and the traditionalist who got away. The only slight of hand here is by John. Either that or he has some sort of disorder that causes memory loss. (More evidence of THAT below.)

Candi also talks about a booking contest with a company that specialized in Mexico. She won that trip by booking lots of travel. She went completely free including round trip air to a beautiful resort called the Royal Hideaway in the beautiful Mayan Rivera.

According to John, Royal Hideaway will not accept a YTB agent on a FAM because YTB has lost their IATAN accreditation. The IATAN requirement for Royal Hideaway might be true…might not. I have to ask however why IATAN is relevant when you win a trip that’s provided by a company the specializes in Mexico? Small detail that again either escaped him or he was holding his breath in the hope that you’d miss that this was a contest provided by the supplier, not something she asked for as travel professional courtesy. But it just might work for the casual reader who is only interested in finding something negative, or a reason hate a company or poeple that are still sticking around after two years of pitching the same tired old line.

Remember the memory loss I eluded to earlier? I find it hilarious that John is trying this line again:

She claimed to have been flown to Minneapolis and wooed by Carlson who wanted her agency to join the conglomerate, yet no one at Carlson has any records of her name or her agency.

Are we to assume the this goof simply forgot that we’ve covered Candi’s affiliation with Carlson with two letters, one signed by Roger Block himself, and the other from Linda Fox that came with a Formal Agreement that was deemed by John as being authentic just last year? These two documents did convince him at one point, but he doesn’t remember that embarrassment now? I think it’s more accurate to speculate that we’re back to the denial phase now that it’s a year later and again crossing our fingers that nobody remembers how badly beaten and bruised he got the first time he pulled the same stunt.

If you say the same lie over and over, maybe it might come true? Maybe you can get someone to believe you this time. Or maybe you simply get caught for the same tired old story because you’re too thick headed to admit you’ve ever been wrong even once.

Not this group. They go on the attack and attempt to deflect in order to save face. We’re overreacting. I’m coming to Candi’s aid as her knight in shining armour to defend her. I’m wearing a man bra!

One of the other chums, who’s can deflect with the best of them attempted to turn the tables and put the burden of proof back on me. The pitch here is hat you actually need an IATAN in order to get an agent rate and since YTB does not have IATA accreditation, we’re not eligible for FAM’s.

Ainsworth tries this little line to intimidate and demand an answer:

Doug, you’re the once coming across as stupid. You’re right in stating that the first paragraph is speaking of Candy’s years being a TRADITIONAL travel agent. The whole blog post is about her years as a TRADITIONAL travel agent, and all the things she got to experience. None of the things she mentions here happened since she joined ytb! What has she gotten to experience like these things in the 3 years that she has been with ytb, hmmmmm? Answer that, Mr. Know It All.

Okay chump, since you asked, I do know of an offer Candi received from YTB THIS year:

And just how do I know that Candi got this special invite for being a Travel Pro with YTB? Because I got it too.

That’s right! Those of us who produce and book lots and lots of travel like the moral of Candi’s story still get offers.  And note, no magic IATAN is required, no calling the resort, no worries about if we could get in…YTB was invited and for those of us who work hard and book travel, the invitation was passed along to us.

That’s something that Traditional Travel Agents don’t want you to know. Suppliers actually invite YTB just like they do any other agency regardless of accreditation. What suppliers look for is productivity. Suppliers actually consider YTB a valuable source of revenue because we produce. While IATAN certainly provides proof of that with a minimum of $5K in commissions earned, it isn’t really required for the VAST majority of the trips that are offered.

And what would a post from these critics be without the personal insults that Candi couldn’t make it as a “real agent”. I suspect that before long the insult will be that Travel MLM has come up with a far superior product offer for those that are serious about staying in the travel business. (Which is what Candi saw years ago because she’s smart, not some dead beat.)

To prove my point, I have a challenge for the smarter than average critics out there that like spout off that a traditional host is a better alternative.

Provide me documentation of just one Host, one Agency, one single Brick and Mortar that:

  • offers 80%-100% commission contracts.
  • pays cash bonuses of up to $10K when you hit performance levels for travel commissions earned.
  • AND completely covers the cost of your Medical Insurance and provides a $150,000 Life Insurance policy.
  • Oh, and you need to give me that “hat trick” for less than $500 start up and $49.95 per monthly overhead.

Fact of the matter is that they can’t and that my friends scares the livin’ daylights out of some of the traditionalist who live in La La Land that these traditional host are a better deal. That’s why we have deceptive posts like John’s and the loyal band of thieves to keep up with the charade about YTB being a flawed business model and that Candi couldn’t make it in the traditional arena.

In this current economic climate, coupled with how badly beaten the traditionalist have been from suppliers the internet, and the change to self service, YTB has a safer, more profitable alternative for those who are serious about selling travel bar none.

Spout off all you want about me, Candi, Coach, Scott, Kim or anyone else associated with YTB folks. We already saw this model for what it is. We’re already in and enjoying the best compensation the industry has ever seen. If you want to come along, feel free.

But if you want to spout off, lie and slander based on jealousy…can it. Like so many times before, it’s only going to show that nose of yours is getting bigger by the day.

Oh and John, since you’re big on being the spelling ace…it’s Cand”i”, not Cand”y”. ;-P

The Easter Egg Hunt

A couple weeks ago, I got an e-mail from good friend Charlie Howe with a very funny mock ESPN Press Release that President Obama and Roger Gadel would be dividing Pittsburgh’s 6 Super Bowl Trophies to teams that were less fortunate. Namely, the Detroit Lions who went 0-16 this past season.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, who by virtue of hard work, excellent team play, stellar draft choices, responsible investing of free agents, careful hiring of coaches and excellent community service and commitment to their fans, has prospered greatly during the past 30 years and have won six Super Bowl Trophies. But President Barack Hussain Obama’s plan calls for the Pittsburgh Steelers to carry the larger burden of the NFL’s less successful teams. Obama went on to further proclaim, “In these difficult times we are all in this to work together. We must reclaim the NFL Championship Dream for every team, for every city and for every fan.”

easteregghuntWhile something like this sounds obsurd I began to realize a couple years ago that that’s exactly what we are teaching our children. One holiday tradition that I first noticed this was the Easter Holiday we just enjoyed yesterday. Before my children entered into grade school, they were enrolled in an academy which had an Easter egg hunt for the kids. I also noticed the same practice in our neighborhood egg hunt for the kids.

Parents would go out and hide the eggs based on a level of difficulty appropriate for the age before sending the kids out in a group to collect and find the eggs. Watching the event, you would see kids who were going all out in gathering up the eggs, while others seemed to wonder aimlessly around not really all that concerned with the activity at hand. At times two kids would race towards the same egg, but only one was able to put the egg in their basket.

After the event the kids would gather with their baskets. A few baskets would be overflowing with eggs, while others would have a paltry one or two eggs.

Not to worry, as the baskets were collected by adults the kids were whisked away to another activity while the adults divided all the eggs equally between the baskets, giving each child the exact same amount per basket. No matter how hard or little each individual child worked to collect the eggs, each was granted an amount deemed appropriate and fair.

For children, I really don’t have a problem with dividing up the eggs, until this equal division of property, money, or belongings becomes a right as an adult. I realized what an early age we teach our young this idea of taking from the “haves” to give the “have-nots”. This practice should be used with children as a lesson in sharing and giving of our resources. It becomes a problem however when it’s taken out of context and this “larger burden” is taught throughout our school years, trapping many as they grow up with this limiting belief into adulthood.

I’ve seen this type of limited thinking for years, but it’s become especially prevalent since the economic recession hit and a gallup poll I found support that thorey of growth. And for some reason, this increase has nothing to do with what they themselves are doing to create that perception. (Heaven forbid we take responsibility for our own circumstances.) Just like the Super Bowl Trophies, it’s not an excellent work ethic, stellar choices, responsible investment of money, careful attention to picking the right mentors to model and learn from, or a commitment to their family to prosper to become one of the haves instead of the have-nots.

Unless an individual actually learns what natural abundance is all about, people are held hostage by this limiting thinking. For those who have learned that it’s not a problem with limited resources (only beliefs) they don’t have a problem with sharing resources, money, or knowledge. We realize that like Doritos, you can eat all you want, we’ll make more. For some, it almost seems effortless, natural in a way. If you look at nature, it doesn’t struggle, it doesn’t hoard, nor does there seem to be any shortage of resources for each blade of grass, leaves growing on trees, or flowers blooming during this time of year. You do have to provide the proper amount of sunlight, water, and nourishment while nature takes care of the rest without any further effort on your part. You couldn’t stop it even if you tried.

My newsletter is a perfect example of abundance. By giving away what I know in knowledge about YTB to others based on my years of experience with the company, I’ve been given other opportunities and resources that support me. The more poeple I help, the more resources I have at my disposal. Old beliefs would have kept me from offering this out to everyone because the belief was there’s not enough. But because I understand the context of the teaching as a child during the egg hunt, I now reap the rewards.

We run into this fear of not enough especially in Network Marketing, all the people at the top who got in early, make all the money. They obsess over this “fact” not realizing that the theory they’re so fearful of has ever come to true. Yet they spend a considerable amount of time and energy warning everyone that comes across their path that someone is going to loose out. And like the innocent children who wondered around aimlessly during the egg hunts that were held all over the country, they as adults are left with empty promises and no money to speak of because their too distracted about what they learned while growing up.

Most NFL fans only look at the 6 Super Bowl Trophies right now and if you’re a fan of another team, look in envy of the 6 Super Bowl Trophies. Especially Cowboy fans. (Isn’t that right Charlie?) They look at the last 40 years when Chuck Noll was hired as head Coach and the dynasty that he started back in the 70’s. Nobody considers the first 40 years of their existence in the NFL when they lived in the basement with only a handful of winning seasons during their first 40 years. They were certainly one of the have-nots during that time and the laughing stock of the NFL.

When Chuck Noll was hired in 1969, he changed that way the team drafted, the way they practiced, and the way they thought about basic techniques and drills. In making these small adjustments, he changed the direction and the destiny of the team from a basement dweller to Super Bowl Champion. Instead of looking for a handout, taking from the haves as a have-not, change those childhood memories and thinking that there’s not enough and begin to think and work like those more successful than you are. That my friend is the REAL American Dream of Hope in this country. You don’t need a hand out, you don’t need the Government, and you certainly don’t need that limiting belief any longer. If you do what other successful teams or people do, you’ll begin to reap the rewards of their success.

It’s never too late to start, and your chances of creating something based on proper thinking and action, instead of waiting for some hand-out will greatly enhance your chances of success and happiness. It’s not easy, it takes some time, and there is a considerable amount of doubt the creeps in from a considerable amount of screaming and yelling going on by those who only want what’s fair based on what they were taught as a child.

It’s time to grow up and become an adult and stop complaining and start creating.

Since I got my new iPhone, I’ve been enjoying a number of features along with PodCasts and MP3 books which have been feeding my mind good, positive, and healthy information. I’ve been a firm believer of “what you think about, you bring about” for a long time. It’s a big reason why I haven’t watched the news in years, if it’s important enough for me to find out about, it will find it’s way to me. Reading or watching negative news is a major reason why the majority of people in our world these days seem to struggle from day to day in one area or another in their lives, while others seem to be able to have all the luck, and all the breaks.

Still, some think promoting their own illusions and bad news by twisting words in order to fit their own agenda. I recently received a Google Alert that one critic still can’t grasp the difference between sales and promotion, even when the comments section clearly distinguishes the difference. Ignoring the true spirit of what’s written doesn’t make your views right or wrong, they’re simply perceptions and opinions. 

get_smart_shoe_phoneI’ve been resigned to the fact that I’m completely powerless in changing certain perceptions for some time. You either accept what I have to say and how I view this world for face value or you don’t. It makes very little difference to me what flavor Kool-aid you drink or to what degree you spike the Kool-aid to enable you to see things through your own set of glasses. This world is abundant with poeple who are not only capable but willing to view things my way to even worry about the unwilling or those incapable of changing their perception if they don’t want to.

We each have our own set of “files” that have been embedded into our minds that make us think and act the way we do by the people we hang with or listen to. Some can change either out of choice, and sometimes change comes out of necessity. To try to force your own beliefs on someone else can not only be exhausting, but often times, you drive someone farther away by doing so. (Even if their purpose is only to say “I’ll show YOU!”)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, nobody likes to be proven wr..wro…wrrrrrr…

Sorry…still struggling with that word.

Nobody likes to be shown they’re mistaken.

That doesn’t mean however that we can’t come up with examples of our own perceptions and beliefs on this side of the fence, and welcome those who agree with us with open arms when the opportunity arises.

Back at the beginning of the month I uncovered a number of truths thanks to someone who actually works for a supplier in the travel industry. Although this critic’s agenda is an attempt to malign and slander our company, it’s become clear that while he says one thing, suppliers actually feel and act quite differently than the claims made by a select few who want to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes.

While critics can’t quite grasp why an MLM model would work in the travel industry I eluded to a number of supplier benefits when working with an MLM, which in this economy can greatly enhance thier bottom line for a minimal investment of both time and money. Of course, what I wrote didn’t fit critics perceptions based on the Kool-aid they drink. Instead, and I’ve seen this all to often, the true meaning and intent of what I wrote was somehow twisted and spun in the opposite direction, with the hope that they can take my words and use them against me to advance their own agenda. I’m labeled as a renegade, clueless, mean spirited, and am somehow a cause of irritation.

To each their own, but remember it’s much easier to blame something or someone else, rather than take responsibility for your own thinking and actions.

The spin machine and the accusations concerning my ideas in this article was certainly no different. The desperation however had escalated and my article was not only sent into the YTB Home Office, but a number of chums this critics has befriended inside of Pleasant Holidays. It’s my understanding these chums spend each weekend exchanging horror stories about YTB. (And the thought of every meeting in the Travel Industry has the letters “YTB” in it is absurd according to another critic.) Since I exposed the truth, AGAIN, this critic tried to turn up the heat to discredit and point fingers at me in order to take the focus off of himself and his own misconceptions.

To be sure, both YTB and Pleasant Holidays got my message and had a chance to read my suggestions.

So while John attempts to convince everyone that YTB costs suppliers money, a supplier himself provides a rather unique Freudian slip and let’s the cat out of the bag that suppliers don’t hire YTB, suppliers don’t provide Co-op advertising to YTB, and suppliers only pay YTB for what YTB produces. That’s my friends is a model that suppliers NEED in an economy such as this, and the smart suppliers that actually get that concept such as Carnival Corporation, Globus, Trafalgar, MSC Cruises, Apple Vacations, Disney, and many other preferred suppliers reap the rewards of our business model. I can’t remember the last time Pleasant Holidays was even mentioned in a Travel Compass, a training call, or at Funshine. They do sit on our site, but nobody pays any attention to them because nobody from the company is promoting their features, advantages, and benefits. In all honesty, how much would it cost the company to get on a conference call the we provide, or hop in front of a camera for a video that we produce?

But no…they would rather spend thousands with a bunch of struggling Agents who demand co-op dollars in order to promote them with no guarantees of any return of their investment, when one call, or webinar would drive traffic and sales to help their bottom line costing them virtually nothing.

What’s unfortunate for our critic is everyone has the ability to interpret what’s written on their own and people can and do form thier own conclusions. Not everyone drinks the same flavor Kool-aid. So what do you think happened after this critic attempted to spin my idea into badmouthing a 50 year old supplier who’s been sitting on our booking engine without putting forth the type of promotion or training like our preferred suppliers do?

Our regularly scheduled Travel Training call with one supplier/vendor was replaced with another this past Thursday night, and I’ll give you three guesses as to just who that replacement might have been. (And the first two don’t count.)

It appears that the true spirit of my suggestion was received by either YTB, Pleasant Holidays or both, because we not only had our first training call with Pleasant Holidays in I don’t know how long, but they provided a nice promotional PDF to promote the features, advantages, and benefits of Pleasant Holidays to our clients.

I’d argue that they got the message loud and clear don’t you?

I’m not going to mention just who was on this call from Pleasant Holidays, but if you’re and RTA, you can find information in both the Travel Compass, and our Travel Training call achieve in your Travel Portal. (Both dated February 18th, 2009) I don’t want to subject the Pleasant Holidays BDM to the same outrage from our critics that Vicki Freed had received when they found out she supported the YTB business model when she was with Carnival. A real shame, but that’s how immature and selfish these “professionals” can be.

Instead, I’ll simply tell those of you in YTB where to find this information and suggest that you study it, and start promoting Pleasant Holidays since they’ve shown that they too understand our business model and want to support what we do. Remember, you can only contact Pleasant Holidays directly once you have become First Class Certified and a minimum level of RTA. (Affiliates who have not been trained can only book through our booking engine.)

And our critic who thinks he knows more than I do based on what he’s been told by others instead of learning from experience…

Let’s face it, YTB has hit the skids and is at the end of their rope. Ah well, what’s one more supplier lost because of a RTA that can’t keep his ego-driven mouth shut? Bad publicity, lost revenue, and more suppliers to cut them off at the trunk. I won’t even bring up the lawsuits.

In case anyone is wondering, yes, I did send his blog and the offending part to Pleasant Holidays and another copy to Eran at YTB. I’m sure they’ll all be amused.

Missed it by that much.

Let’s try this on for size. If nothing else, I’m personally indebted to this critic. “Agent 99″ has single handily exposed the truth about more lies, myths, and misconceptions about our company and our business model than all the other “Agents” who have been attempting to do the same for the last year and a half.

When NASA began the launch of astronauts into space, they found out that the pens would not work at zero gravity (ink will not flow down to the writing surface). To solve this problem, it took them one decade and $12 million. They developed a pen that worked at zero gravity, upside down, underwater, in practically any surface including crystal and in a temperature range from below freezing to over 300 degrees C.

kiss1What did the Russians do to solve the same problem?

They used a pencil.

One of the most memorable case studies on Japanese management was the case of the empty soapbox, which happened in one of Japan ’s biggest cosmetics companies. The company received a complaint that a consumer had bought a soapbox that was empty. Immediately the authorities isolated the problem to the assembly line, which transported all the packaged boxes of soap to the delivery department. For some reason, one soapbox went through the assembly line empty. Management asked its engineers to solve the problem.

Engineers worked hard to devise an X-ray machine with high-resolution monitors manned by two people to watch all the soapboxes that passed through the line to make sure they were not empty. No doubt, they worked hard and they worked fast but they spent an exorbitant amount tf money to do so.

But when a rank-and-file employee in a small company was posed with the same problem, he didn’t use X-rays and cameras, but instead bought a strong industrial electric fan and pointed it at the assembly line. He switched the fan on, and as each soapbox passed the fan, it simply blew the empty boxes out of the line.

When I sobered up some 20 years ago everyone, including myself at the time spent a considerable amount of time discussing and contemplating what it would take to become one of those “old timers” in AA. When I was fresh out of rehab I joined a Home Group up in Pittsburgh that had one of those “old timers” in it. His name was Sam P. and at the time, he had been sober for some 25 years. Sam was great, and everyone looked up to him and boy did he have some stories. (We all did.) We hung on his every word and constantly asked what it would take for us to become an old timer like he was.

His response was classic, and I can still hear his high pitched sarcastic voice all these years later when he would reply with:

“Don’t pick up, and don’t die!”

I guess after 20 years of not picking up, and the fact that I’m still here is proof that his very simple method works. There isn’t a day the goes by that I don’t think about being a recovering alcoholic, but I can’t remember the last time I craved a drink or a drug. It’s just not an option any longer.

Now I drink Kool-Aid, and frankly, it’s a much better alternative than the poison I use to consume. It clouded my judgment and made me paranoid. I would also obsess over the smallest of things, always focused on the problem, never the solution.

I also learned about K.I.S.S. in AA. If you don’t know, K.I.S.S. stands for Keep It Simple Stupid. Today I can spot within seconds how some can make things much harder than they need to be, and have a tendency to complicate things. I guess they need to prove either to themselves or someone else that they’re smarter than everyone else. Sometimes it can be extremely funny, but more times than not, it’s rather sad to watch, knowing there is a solution out there, and it’s much simpler than most could conceive.

I’m constantly told by others how to fix the issues with YTB. Oddly enough, most of the criticism and comments come from people who don’t have any practical experience on the MLM side of our business that can offer anything worth while. Yet their focus, attention, and problems are always on the MLM side of our business. It’s a huge distraction for most and emotions can run very high causing some really nasty conversations that honestly don’t do anything more than make one side feel better about themselves while they attempt to shame the other side into submission.

That being said, the answer for YTB lies on the non MLM side of our business, the one you actually pay for, the one that’s set up like any other host agencies out there. (Nexion comes to mind.)

The answer is simple, sell travel.

Mind you, selling travel will not put to rest and resolve anything for some. Some I’m afraid might never come to grips that YTB is a part of the travel industry and will never accept any of it’s members as peers. Honestly, I don’t know why those opinions really matter, being as miserable as they are. (Who wants to hang with attitudes like that??) But for those who can look at the facts, for those who don’t need to make excuses, or try to spin and justify things in order to simply belittle and malign, most will look at Travel Weekly, notice what Carnival is doing, and pick up how YTB lookes and acts like a bonified Host.

Keep it simple. Focus on the main goal from our Founders, and that’s to be the number one Travel Agency in the world. Oddly enough, you need to sell travel in order to do that. (Who knew??) By doing so, it will resolve the problems and issues of those who matter, and for the ones who don’t matter…well there’s really not much we can do now is there? So why worry about it?

I know of some who are still carrying around resentment and anger over what happened to them some 20 years ago when AL Williams took over the Insurance Industry. Can you imagine? Who wants to live like that? I sure don’t, and if you think you can learn something from anyone who does, you’re sadly mistaken.

Let it go already, and Keep It Simple Stupid.

Don’t Look Now…

I’ve been told that the travel industry is just swimming along famously. No problems, no concerns, (other than those pesky MLM’s of course) and everything is just drifting along quite well. I was wondering what planet some of these Travel Agents live on. If you’d like to participate and only focus on one company, one issue, one glass of Kook-Aid you too might come to the conclusion that our MLM model is the ONLY model that has some of issues listed below.

Typically I see single posts or threads about MLM topics so folks can rant and rave about how horrid MLM is. Problem is, as I was reading through some of the trades this week, there were so many similar topics I’ve seen about MLM, it might take weeks to write single posts about each one separately. Don’t really want to spend the time or energy writing about problems, as I happen to be a solutions kind of guy.

dont-look-hereI know it’s a long shot for some, but wanted to see if we could take the blinders off to look outside of MLM and Travel and see what’s going on with the entire industry. Blinders can be great, but sometimes it’s a good idea to look around if nothing more for a status check to gauge how well, or how poor your single perspective might actually be.

Since I don’t want to boar readers, we’ll just give you the Readers Digest condensed version of each of the following topics, and as usual, you’ll find the third party links to actually documentation instead of trying to dig it up yourselves or just taking my word for it. (Remember, don’t believe a word you hear, unless you can verify it on your own to be true.)

First we have Frank Serio, a former owner and operator of Travel Concepts in Rhode Island who was sentenced in federal court to 15 months for wire fraud and defrauding airlines and Amtrak out of $571,000. According to Travel Weekly, he bought tickets at steep discounts and then obtained refunds based on full fares.

Serio had purchased tickets using other names and fictitious names and used phony voucher numbers or numbers reserved for airline/train employees and their relatives.  He also reported the sales through ARC and paid with a business or personal credit card.

Soon after each purchase, Serio requested full-price refunds through ARC, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office. In this way, he extracted $571,000 in refunds from American Airlines, British Airways, Continental, Delta, Royal Jordanian, United, US Airways and Amtrak.

The FBI investigated the case and ARC cooperated. Frank reports to prison on Jan. 5.

I’ve seen the word bankruptcy used all too often, for years in fact. Advantage Rent A Car has filed a voluntary petition with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. 440 people nationwide received layoff notifications this past Monday. Advantage will explore alternatives during the company’s reorganization, including the possibility of a sale or merger.

In addition to seeking Chapter 11, Advantage has decided to consolidate its network of car-rental locations nationwide — keeping open only its most profitable store locations.

“The current economic environment has dramatically affected the travel industry,” said Jon Austin, a spokesman for Advantage. “We have been hit with a simultaneous drop in leisure travel, with greatly increased costs and frozen credit markets. These factors are affecting many industries and companies and we are not immune from these forces. These painful steps are a recognition of that reality.”

Advantage will employ only 460 people at the remaining locations and its corporate offices in San Antonio.

Some might consider Advantage a small player in the market, and simply can’t compete with some of the big boys in the market. Not necessarily the case, as news of Budget Rent A Car also announced they will be closing it’s contact center in Wichita Falls, Texas early first quarter 2009. (Some 1,400 jobs will be lost overall at Budget due to their cost cutting measures.)

Why one jet is raising a considerable amount of fuss, United has sold 15 Boeing 757s to East Shore Aircraft to raise $150 million in capital. They appear to agree that selling off some assets is a good way to to raise some much needed cash. United has raised more than $250 million of the $300 million by selling off assets in the fourth quarter of 2008.

I also realized that the ASTA is the be all and end all for some. I was shocked to find out that this association hasn’t cleared a profit since 2002. The ASTA took a loss of about $800,000 in 2007 and will take an additional hit of between $400,000 and $500,000 this year. It’s also reported that it’s spent some $2.5 million of it’s reserves to balance it’s budget in just two years time.

And while some can’t see paradigm shift going on in this industry right now…

Maloney said ASTA was “locked into the old World Travel Congress model” through 2005, at a time of “the collapse of the agency system” through disintermediation, and hence a declining pool of agencies from which to recruit members. This occurred, he said, in tandem with the rise of consortia and the conviction of many agencies that, if they had to choose, consortia were more important to the bottom line.

The news also brought to light that it’s lost support from the supplier end, focusing more on the Agencies themselves. Possibly because the ASTA appears to me at least to be completely out of touch and out of sync.

This last article about Royal Caribbean lending a hand to Agents in these difficult times, I couldn’t help but think of my good freind Candi May who was given the same type of lip service when she was struggling, and was told by her peers that “business couldn’t be better”.

I’ve always liked Vicki and it appears that most of the traditionalists respect her as well. But I wonder if her quote about things not being so rosey will wake some of the Agents I’ve seen who are in such denial about the state of thier business right now.
“This economic environment is unprecedented, and our travel agent partners need our unprecedented support,” said Vicki Freed, senior vice president of sales for Royal Caribbean International, in a statement. “Like everyone, they are feeling the pain, and we need to help them through this.”

The only pain some appear to have are those pesky MLM’s who are to blame for all thier troubles. Instead of being grateful for what Royal Caribbean has done for them, on many levels I might ad, my guess is that the focus will continue to be how MLM is a bad mix. Honestly, from what I’ve seen, the obsession, anger, and resentment is only getting worse, and hit an all time low yesterday. (Too embarassing to elaborate, so don’t even ask.)

With all the chatter and focus on how crooked and poorly managed MLM is, it appears that some might need to take the blinders off and look around. (Ya think?)
