You Can Protect Our Company and Publications

Digg me

We’ve been writing our weekly newsletter for the last three years now for YTB and ZamZuu business owners. It’s been one of the most rewarding things we’ve ever done. The compliments and appreciation we get from subscribers means more than we can truly express. What started out as a team newsletter has spread throughout the company. Today, we send broadcasts reaching thousands of YTB and ZamZuu subscribers.

While our publication is designed and written for existing members of YTB and ZamZuu only, there are those who have subscribed under false pretenses. Opting to lie about their identity under an assumed name and e-mail address with the intent to play “Mall Cop”. After the California Settlement was reached two years ago, I was contacted by the Home Office with a list of “violations” from the Attorney General’s Office in California.

The AG had incorrectly charged that our publication was being used as a “recruiting tool” which was most certainly expressed by overzealous critics who desperately wanted to have my publication shut down.

After seeing so many desperate and childish stunts which feed Zealots uncontrollable obsession over YTB, we were well prepared for such an outlandish accusation. We set up our newsletter to verify our members with a valid ID and website address. We also used a double opt in feature to ensure that everyone who signed up actually verified with us they did indeed want our publication.

No shenanigans on our end.

These precautions were two fold. One, I wanted to make sure that everyone receiving this information was actually in YTB or ZamZuu already. And two, I fully expected the trolls to sign up – which they did – and were promptly deleted.

While their first attempt under real names and e-mail addresses were banned from our system, the sleaze then resorted to lying. Finding a YTB member in their local area that mirrored a location close to their own IP address, these parasites sucked off the other site owners ID and website address with a newly created gmail.com account and presto! Success in having our publication diverted to their inbox anyway.

Pretty elaborate scheme don’t you think? That’s the kind of bizarre behavior I’ve come to know while they pretend to be this noble, honorable “Mall Cop” for pour, unsuspecting souls. Truth is, they’re as dirty as the day is long.

A quick fix for the entire Attorney General debacle was a report of my entire list of subscribers with valid ID and website address, verification IP address, minus the user last name and e-mail address. The report clearly validated all subscribers were already in YTB and opted in under their own free will. A letter explaining that it was highly improbable that I was “recruiting” existing YTB website owners based on this report was also sent to the Home Office.

Not sure if it was the last time the AG or the Home Office ever heard about these “violations” again, but I certainly haven’t.

Interesting how morals, ethics, and honesty have no place for an obsessed Zealot that has to be right. When it comes to justifying their perceptions and perpetrating their fears and misconceptions to the general public, all this ethical stuff is mere window dressing they like to hide behind. It’s not just my newsletter they’ve infiltrated either. They’ve signed up as free Reps with the company, have become Fans of every Facebook page YTB or ZamZuu has, and have subscribed to every YTB and ZamZuu publication and newsletter they can get their hands on in order to feed their uncontrollable addiction.

With the latest settlement with the Attorney General in Illinois behind us, a new push by these imbeciles is once again in full swing. Obviously, they’re a bit upset that YTB was able to come to an agreement with another Attorney General and we are able to continue our business model. That’s what normal adults do – come to an agreement. Critics however have resorted to intercepting a new round of private correspondence, making its way to the internet with lists of supposed “violations” to say “see I told you I was right”.

While it’s clear that these correspondence are designed for “members only” – it’s upsetting the owners of these publications. Therefore, I’m offering up a list of items or precautions that you should implement in order to protect your publication and our fine company.

First, you need to accept that there will be sleazy little liars who will do and say anything in attempt to save face or to justify their position. Its part of the game they play. While I certainly don’t agree with it, getting upset and frustrated about it gives them the power and the control. You can take every precaution you want, and they’ll find a way to gain access. They’re that desperate for information and they need something they can spin against you and the company.

Second, most systems have a double opt in feature – use it. With the current CAN-SPAM Act that is in place, it’s not just jerks you want to protect against; it’s the FTC. Signing up someone to your mailing list is a practice we’ve never used. If your information and content is the quality it should be, you’ll get plenty of subscribers the right way. Every single subscriber we have has verified with our system they want our publication.

Third and I know this kind of sounds obvious – but put a disclaimer on your sign up page and in your publication something to this effect:

This newsletter is for information purposes for existing Website Sellers and Website Owners only.
It is not to be used as a recruiting tool for anyone outside the YTB company.

It won’t keep the pin heads out – but it will protect you in the event a pin head tries to play “Mall Cop” and claim you’re trying to recruit the general public or violating any rules.

Forth, and I know you’re not going to like this – but either turn off the “forward to a friend” feature or make sure your subscribers know that it’s only to be sent to existing team members. We’ve never used the “forward to a friend” feature for this reason: There may be some really good content that your subscriber wants to share with team members. Those team members however, may not want or feel the information is necessary. An issue we’ve had for years are folks who forward our publication out to team members and the team member unsubscribes the subscriber who sent it – because they don’t want it. (An unsubscribe link is also mandatory with current SPAM laws by the way.) Disabling this feature keeps complaints to a minimum because it’s only going to folks who actually subscribed.

An alternative for team members is having them forward your opt in link and have team members subscribe on their own. What you’ll find is an open rate that extraordinarily high, and a complaint rate that is practically non existent.

And finally, look over your data. We were able to spot our unauthorized troll by looking over our data. When Aweber changed their pricing along with their terms and conditions on us about a year ago, we had to upgrade. While we were upset at first having to pay more for exceeding 2500 subscribers, the new system and reports it offered showed just who was clicking what.

Low and behold, we found that one edition of our publication that was ripped off and posted publicly on a Zealots blog had over one dozen clicks from a single subscriber. A dozen clicks on the same link? Maybe two or three, but that amount raised a red flag. While the subscribers ID matched his website, and the IP matched where he lived – we found this subscriber based in Annapolis, Maryland had two subscriptions. One with a legitimate, unique domain, and the other with a Gmail account. The high click count came from the Gmail account – so we knew who was real and who the liar was.

It took me no time at all to delete the overzealous little twit.

If you have a newsletter and send correspondence to your team, I realize that you’re doing your team a service. I know all about offering news, support, training, mentorship, and positive reinforcement. It does have value and is a worthy and important part of being a true leader. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to acknowledge those traits because they’re so jacked up on hateraide. They simply can’t get past this idea that all you do is recruit and pick the pockets of poor unsuspecting souls. That’s the mantra rattling around in that empty space where a brain should reside. While they have no practical experience to base this limiting and false belief on – trying to change it is a complete waste of your time and effort. Just realize that they own that belief and you don’t have to.

So there you have it folks. Take it from me. These idiots have done it to me dozens of times and to no avail. Follow these simple steps and you not only protect your publication from being squashed, but you protect our fine company as a whole.

A Little Help Over Here!

Digg me

One of the quickest and easiest ways to expand business is to hire “virtual employees”.

I first read about the idea of outsourcing certain tasks in an effort to be more productive a few years ago in a book by Timothy Ferriss “The 4-Hour Workweek“. While I’ve always understood the concept, and there’s a part of my that likes it – I’ve always been the type that likes to do things on my own. Especially when it comes to working on the computer. (I’m a computer geek – what can I say.)

Business however has gotten to the point that I need some help if I’m going to expand and grow beyond my current levels. There’s only so much of “me” to go around – so the time has come to start outsourcing.

Here’s the thing – there are plenty of companies I can do this with – but I’d kind of like to “share the wealth” so to speak with my readership. I mean why not? I know someone has the talent I need and it might as well come from someone who’s been faithful and responsive to this blog or our newsletter.

Here’s the deal:

I’ve got a couple of new newsletters that I’m producing and a couple new blogs that I’m ghost writing for. I’ve scoured the internet for just the right template and simply can’t find one that fits my criteria.

So the only way I’m going to get what I want is to create it myself or outsource it.

While I love programing and code – Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to base their HTML rendering in MS Word to be difficult. (It’s a huge thorn in the side of programmers and copywriters.) I just don’t have the time right now to create something on my own that would fit what I need for both formats.

But I bet there’s someone out there I know that can do it for me. ;-P

What I need is an HTML and CSS based newsletter template compatible with MS Outlook 2007 or 2010 Beta versions. (Among other formats.) The template newsletter will be distributed with Aweber and the template needs to display identically on MS Outlook compared to the preview page of Aweber. The template will have 4 main sections plus a footer and a header. Each section and corresponding subsection will also require the proper comment brackets inserted within the code so that each sub section can be easily identified and/or moved and changed via code only. Updated graphics and a Web 2.0 look is also a huge plus.

I can supply some examples and some of the key issues and difficulties I’ve run into to help clarify any questions.

I do have a budget for this particular project and if the work meets my expectations (solves my problem in a timely manor) there will be other projects that will be available as we grow and expand. (A number of lucrative JV opportunities are being discussed at this time.) Any programming will also be properly credited to the designer and linked to the proper contact information and/or website.

So what do you say? I’d much rather give this to someone I know – rather someone I don’t via some service.

If interested, feel free to contact me with samples of your work along with pricing.

Thanks! And enjoy your extended weekend!

Whaddaya Know…A Writing Gig…

Digg me

I wanted to give “yenz guys” a heads up. (That’s Pittsburgheze for “Ya’ll” here in Georgia)

I don’t plan on posting anything next week here on the blog. Instead, I’ve been contracted to write for another company and a pretty extensive project. (Which will remain nameless.) Being as visible as I am and with hundreds of posts over the years, people do contact me from time to time to write. I’ve been told numerous times that I have a style that’s not only very personal, but entertaining.

While I don’t actively seek out this type of work, I’ve written for several companies and blogs over the last two years that has not only been a lot of fun, but turning into a profitable little business. This particular project is extremely time sensitive and with the amount of articles they’re looking for, I’d much rather focus my time and energy busting this out.

I’ll be back as soon as I can. (Most likely a week.)

I’ve heard it said that if you find a way to get paid for doing what you love to do – you’ll never “work” another day in your life. Well, I’m living proof of that. It’s not always easy, and it’s not always a bed of roses – but it certainly beats punching a time clock and making money for someone else in a dead end J.O.B.

Besides, I’m far too spoiled at this point with the ability to call my own shots, and create my own schedule.

Not to worry, the Newsletter will still go out as scheduled and if I happen to find anything during the week that tickles my fancy, I may pop in for a quick post – but don’t count on it.

Until then…

What’s Your Why?

Monday, January 25th, 2010
14
Digg me

Remember those goals we wrote about at the beginning of the year? Just wanted to do a little check up with you on how they’re going.

As January comes to a close next week we’re coming up on the time of year when the fitness clubs start to thin out, McD0nald’s and other fast food service restaurants begin to see an increase in profits, and sales for Nicorette gums and patches drop way down. It’s much more noticeable this time of year because everyone comes into the new year with a bang, only to fade off weeks later and go back to a comfort zone they’re familiar with.

If you’re in the Network Marketing or Direct Sales industry, you see this kind of thing all year long. That’s why I never get too disappointed when someone tells me no, nor do I get too excited when they say yes and sign up. You learn very quickly that talk is cheap.

Those who have a big enough “why” however, have a much better chance to achieve the goals they’ve set out before them. My grandfather for example had two heart attacks and a mild stroke when I was young. After his second heart attack, the doctor told him he’d never be able to more than walk the dog around the block for the rest of his life. He was in his 40′s at the time, and that’s all he needed to hear in order to quit smoking cold turkey and start exercising.

When I was 16, the two of us rode together on a 50 mile bike ride. (And I was the one who struggled.)

He’s 90 this year, and still walks to the grocery store, the doctor – dentist – and various other locations to keep him active.

He had a big why.

I got into this industry for a pretty big why too.

Security.

See, both Ronda and I had been burned far too many times in the corporate world. Four months after our son Brian was born, Ronda was laid off at Bellsouth after 6 years of service. I had been in the golf industry with a very large company who filed bankruptcy. I then moved to wire and cable with a company who was shut down by the Securities and Exchange Commission for fraud. (Cooking the books.) I worked for Gateway for a short time in their stores before they closed them and went into the big box stores. And my last stint in traditional business was a company called Hi-Fi Buys which I got out of when rumors started to surface about bankruptcy. (Which they eventually did.)

I’ve been with YTB for 5 years now – which is longer than all those other companies combined.

What YTB did for me was teach me how to be self sufficient. It’s also given me an incredible amount of self confidence. One of the reasons I’ve stuck with the company even with all the doom and gloom I use to hear about – I have the tools, mindset, and skills today to not only survive – but thrive on my own.

I never would have learned all that if I didn’t have a big enough why.

My peers at the time, the companies I worked for, nor did any schools teach me anything about being in business for myself. It wasn’t until I got around others like Coach, my Directors, and other Network Marketers that I needed to think about a company called “You, Inc.”

“You, Inc.”, has taught me how to look at a problem and come up with a solution to solve that problem. Look at my newsletter – now with thousands of subscribers. All started because I was smart enough to see a solution to a communication problem. I look at the market, realize what it needs, and offer services and products that cater to that market. It’s built trust and stability for me that I just couldn’t get in the corporate world.

All because I had a big enough why.

Even with all the ups and downs that YTB has had over the years – it’s a far better alternative and much more rewarding than working in the corporate rat race.

Find your why and you’ll have the same passion and stability. It won’t necessarily make the road less difficult, but it will give you the extra burst to break through to the other side to realize the rewards of the goals you’ve set.

Opportunity will knock for those who are ready, willing, and have a big enough why.

Inspired Action

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010
14
Digg me

I love this time of year. My creativity seams to flow much better after I’ve done a good round of goal setting.

I’ve done goal setting for years. In 2005 I wrote down “new business”, and two weeks later we got a call about YTB. In 2006 I did a round of goal setting and within minutes of putting down on paper the word “writing”, I got a call about some new thing called a blogging. Two years ago I started our Newsletter, complete with a full “7 Day Quick Start” guide to help team members get up and running. None of these ideas were anything more than a thought that was transferred from my head to a piece of paper and then circled as one of the things I wanted to focus my time on.

I couldn’t tell you if any of these opportunities would have come to me if I didn’t spend time thinking about what I wanted to do in my life. Ever since I was introduced to “The Secret” some years ago, I have found some compelling evidence both from personal experience and from what I’ve read that what the mind can conceive it can achieve.

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is to take “inspired action”. Joe Vitale (as well as many others) tell you to follow your small hunches. You may not know where it will lead, but if you do – you’ll be doing exactly what you suppose to do. I know there are many “Christians” who read this blog, and you call that force God. For others who feel more comfortable with “The Universe”  – you can use that terminology if you want.

Think about this phrase for a minute.

“Ask and you shall receive.”

What kills me is that so many people ask for things like a new car, a million dollars, a new soul mate and then just sit there waiting – and waiting – aaaand waiting.

Then end up complaining that it never happens.

That’s because they forgot about another quote that I know they’ve heard over and over again – but never actually do.

“Faith without works is dead.”

The point here is that when you ask for things like a new car, a million dollars, or a new soul mate and focus your energy thinking about those things, opportunities begin to present themselves to nudge you in that direction. It’s up to you to not only recognize what those opportunities are, but to actually move in that direction. If you do, you’ll find that thought an “inspired step” in the direction you want not only moves you closer to your intended goal, but this simple step turns out to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Why? Because that’s what God (or The Universe) wants you to do!

Look…here’s a recent example of what I’m talking about.

One of the items on my list of goals was an overhaul of our newsletters auto-responder “7 Day Quick Start Guide”. I’ve changed this guide a few times since I first created it two years ago. One of the nice things about auto-responders is that once it’s written it works on auto-pilot from then on. That being said – it can often take a back seat because it’s done and you really don’t have to think about it much longer.

This series however has been in need of an overhaul or some time. With all the changes to YTB since it was first published there were areas that needed to be updated and produced to provide a more timely and effective program.

Thanks to GoodDay@YTB and Andy Cauthen’s Goal Setting Tips that I published here on the blog and also provided in our Newsletter a brand new stream of subscribers have been opting-in to our Newsletter. I see spikes in subscribers from time to time, but this particular spike got me thinking.

“What if all these subscribers could get that new series I want to do from my goals list?”

That one little hunch or thought – prompted me to actually start my overhaul of the series – and as a result my series has been taken to a whole new level. It’s like being in “The Zone”. New ideas – new topics – new documents – a completely new look and feel that I feel really – really good about. The more I dive into this project – the more I know that this is exactly what I should be doing right now.

What I first thought to be a major “chore” and really didn’t want to do because of all the work it entails has completely turned around to be a truly inspiring and moving experience for me.

Why? I took “Inspired Action”. This thought – opportunity – project – whatever you want to call it – was presented at the best possible time for me because without knowing it – I was ready to do it.

But I would have never known unless I followed up on this hunch.

I think back a rainy night in January some five years ago after our introduction to YTB with an Opportunity Meeting. I remember talking with Ronda about this business as we weighed the possibilities and the obstacles that presented itself during our drive home. I had no idea if this business was for real – nor was it a proven leader like it is today.

But that one small voice – a hunch – a gut feeling told me that this was the right place at the right time for me.

Based on that hunch am I a millionaire? No.

Do I live in some mansion sitting beside the water? No

Am I financially independent with no worries or problems? Hardly.

But I DO have a business that’s provided for myself and my family. Not only that,  I’ve probably grown more as a person and as a business man over the last five years than any other time in my life. I also have a closer relationship with family and more friends than I could ever ask for. It’s been one of the most rewarding, most productive, and most enjoyable times of my entire life.

I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Stop and actually think the next time an idea or thought comes and rattles around in your head. Most of the time our past programming automatically negates it as either too hard or even worse -  impossible.

Kennedy wanted to put a man on the moon before the end of the 1960′s. Was that too hard? Was that impossible?

Just because you set a goal or state an intention of what you want doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. There’s work involved in anything worth while and many times you have to swim out to it instead of just having it was up on shore.

But if you follow your hunches – your gut instinct – not only will it lead you in the right direction – but you’ll have a blast doing it.

Take hold of that thought and use it to take Inspired Action. You’ll never know until you do how enjoyable life can really be.

The “Happy File”…

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Digg me

Having such a popular newsletter and blog, I get a ton of e-mails these days. There’s not a day that goes by it seems when I don’t get some type of positive comment concerning either my blog or my newsletter. During the National Convention back in August, I was overwhelmed with how many people took the time to find me and tell me how much they appreciate what I do.

One of my team members who hung with me for most of the week was shocked at the amount of people who chased me down in hallways, conference rooms, and at the hotel. (To be honest, so was I.) I hadn’t had this much notoriety since my radio days back in the 80’s. The difference with radio however was that nobody knew what I looked like until they saw me out on remotes.

I was conversing via e-mail with one of our subscribers on how much I appreciate the warm comments and enjoyment others receive when they read this blog or the newsletter. Realizing that I have such a positive effect on so many people is humbling, yet a real kick. Many of you take the time to write and express your appreciation which in turn makes me want to work even harder to bring you the best that I have.

Here’s what she wrote back to me and I thought it would be good to share with you as well.

“Do you keep a “happy file”? It’s a computer file or hard copy file of all the accolades and appreciation or special words that you receive from others.

Explanation: When I first started doing mortgage loans 10 years ago, my underwriter went way beyond any normal expectations to get me out of a predicament, and I wrote her an expressive thank you from my heart. She was so touched that she called me into her room with tears in her eyes and told me how much it meant to her, and that it was going into her “happy file.” She said that when she had bad days, she would go back and read some of the contents of that file. That it would uplift her day, and get her back on track.

When I hear of a good idea, I copy it.

I have 2 children, and have since that day, made “happy files” for both them and for me. When they (both in college now) get absorbed in a pity party, I will send an email from a tennis coach, long ago, that praised them for their perseverance, etc. Get the picture?

Good luck on your “happy file” for both you and yours.”

I thought this was an exceptional idea and wanted to share publically some of the “happy files” I have set aside in my Outlook.

Since I have been receiving your newsletter I am kept up to date with YTB news. You are a great asset to our business. Again I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your management style and for allowing us to receive your newsletter.

Enjoy your Day,
~ Mary

I know I’ve told you this before…but it bears repeating… This is by far the best newsletter I’ve seen in YTB and we subscribe to several. So very informative. I read every word and forward it on to our team. Hopefully they are all subscribing as well. We’ve encouraged it

Thanks for doing this. I know it takes a lot of time.
~ Marti

Thank you again, Doug, for all you do! I so appreciate your newsletter and your blog. You epitomize the YTB standard of sharing and abundance as one YTB family, and you are greatly appreciated.

Were you a copywriter in an earlier life?……….. kudos for all the photos and art work you always include with your news.

Smiles and Sunshine,
~ Susan

My wife Terri and I are in YTB and we love it. Where we live we do not receive a whole lot about the business. So I have learned as much as I could on my own. I research a lot on the Internet and I just wanted to let you know that I like reading your blog, I have a training blog that I put together for our team, but I didn’t put it out to the public, because I was trying to ensure our people were informed. SO GREAT BLOG thanks for keeping the YTB Name going strong.
~ Mike

My husband, Emil & I recently started receiving your Training & Newsletters, which have been very helpful. Thank you so much for sharing with us. We are continuing to build our business, and have utilized some of your info. We first heard about you from Bob & Karin, YTB Directors. They are not our Directors, but were willing to share information. We see them often at meetings.

We appreciate all you do to help others.

Blessings,
~ Joy

I was quite impressed with the professionalism of the newsletter and several of my team members forwarded the information to me and I enjoyed the information.

God Bless,
~ Arlyne

I can’t thank you enough for all you do. I’ve always been a big fan of your blog for years and have thoroughly enjoyed your writing style from the start. Your themes are positive, meaningful, and uplifting and when I need a pick me up I can always count on you! You have a very special gift and wanted to share with you how much my husband and I appreciate all you do.

See you at the top!
~ Cindy

This is just a sampling of e-mails I’ve received since the Newsletter was launched at the beginning of the year. I’ve been overwhelmed at how it’s taken off and become viral, which in computer speak is a good a good thing. It’s not uncommon to have two or three times as many people actually read my newsletter that I send out, which also tells me that the information is not only useful but relevant to what’s going on with our company today.

One of my favorite authors is T. Harv Ecker. Harv told me in his book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind” to think BIG. My intent should be to help thousands of people. The more I can help and influence others the more that comes back to me.

It’s nice to know that theory actually works.

And Susan, thanks for letting me share this idea here for others. I think it’s an exceptional idea and your right, it works like a charm!

Your Lucky Day…

Digg me

Now that my focus has shifted back to a more positive course of thinking and action, I wanted to offer up something for the members of YTB. I’ve been working very closely with my immediate Director, Tim and Georgia Dominey. At the beginning of the year, Tim asked me to start a weekly and monthly Newsletter for his team. It’s something I’ve been doing for my team for some time, and when Tim asked me to start one for his team, I wanted to take the program and content to a whole new level.

What has evolved over the last few months has been something that I’m very proud of and the team members who have been receiving these Newsletters have responded with compliment after compliment. If you haven’t guessed by now, I love to write and there certainly hasn’t been any shortage of information to write about. What started as a monthly newsletter a year or so ago to a select few of my team, has grown to a weekly update of YTB news and events, complete with a “7 Day Quick Start Guide” to get your YTB business started off on the right track, bi-monthly recorded conference calls, weekly and monthly updates on upgrades, enhancements, awards, trainings and events that nobody in YTB should miss.

I’ve always been taught, even from a very early age, that I should always be willing to give of my time, talent, and money. Many of my courses, seminars, and mentors currently have also instilled this believe that what I give out, will be returned to me 10 fold.

Therefore, I am going to open up my Newsletter company wide for any member of YTB. It is my hope that you will find the information I provide not only informative, but that you also see this as a valuable tool for new team members to learn how to build and work their YTB business the right way.

I do have one request of you when doing this, and that is that you provide your YTB Marketing web site for verification purposes when submitting your information. I am only asking you of this because I want to limit this information to YTB Reps and RTA’s only. Your information will not be shared, and will only be used to verify your YTB status with the company. This is also a “double opt-in” type Newsletter, so you’ll be sent an e-mail via the e-mail address you provide to confirm you want this Newsletter.

PS - If you're involved with YTB, sign up for our FREE Newsletter. As a Website Owner or Website Seller, we'll keep you up to date with all the latest news, acquisitions, and developments with YTB.
